A modest overhaul to the dreaded Windhelm Bridge area, including some insidiously ugly seams when using the snow texture replacer.

This overhaul started with annoyances over the Windhelm Bridge area and ugly gaps in some of the grid. This will get worse if you use the Windhelm texture replacer to convert the ground texture to snow. So I taped something on them. I then discovered that if I used another landscape snow texture replacer, the ugly snowdrifts would have a texture mismatch. So I deleted them. Then I realized I didn't like the damn plants stuck to the wall everywhere. So I cut them off.

Then I realized that this whole area was seriously neglected and could use some time to sort out (potentially) lore-friendly changes and tweaks. So I did an overhaul by accident. I don't usually add a bunch of stuff just for the sake of it, but I feel as though it ended up somewhere in between. This is a sensitive area, as the civil war progresses and NPCs develop. Overall, I tried to give the Windheim Bridge a more lively and dignified appearance, while still retaining some of the Nordic trademarks. The Nords are tough, but they're not done with uncultured barbarians. You'll find Nordic-themed additions, guard rest areas, a Talos shrine, and various fortifications. Typically OH&S friendly, with secure protective fencing and railings your chances of falling to a horrific death are minimized. And mini catapults! Although they are only static. In fact, most objects are added as static objects - not all objects are free here.

I'm also using the excellent Better City Entrances, the two mods are designed to complement each other, BCE covers more of the outside area and provides something in the room under the bridge. It is strongly recommended that you use BCE, but it is not required. Installed screenshot.

+Compatibility+

I've tried to make this mod as compatible as possible. I don't like mods that are barely compatible with vanilla Skyrim itself, with NPCs constantly pounding everything. Just a few minor landscaping changes (in WindhelmBridgeExterior01 and 02) removed the unsightly grass clipping the steps. Other than that, this mod only adds objects. I was also careful not to put too much content on the Civil War markers. I had to move downstairs to a smaller spawn spot to accommodate the fireplace, but that's about it. No navmesh editing. Mod cleaned and checked in xEdit.

Other mods I use and are compatible with:

immersive citizenship

Carriage and ferry travel overhaul

Tamriel Master's Light

JKs skyrim

cutting room floor

Requiem

and better access to the city

Not compatible with:

City Entrance Overhaul - Windhelm (I assume)

Windhelm Bridge overhaul

I can't speak for other exterior lighting overhauls that might edit this area (ELFX exterior, etc.) as I don't use them. I removed some of the flashlights that didn't have lights, added light to those that didn't, and shook a few things around to try to accommodate it all without flickering. There is only so much that can be done in this regard. If anyone wants to patch one of these overhauls, they are welcome.

Mods that overhaul Windhelm's interior or dock areas are compatible unless major changes are made to the bridge.

+Load order+

It's basically no big deal since it basically adds the object so you can load it early. If another mod covers the terrain change but doesn't have any major issues, then that patch of grass from the stabilization step will come back and that's it. Mods are marked as ESL so they don't take up a slot in your load order.

+Performance+

I honestly don't know. My system is strong and has no issues. I tried not to add too much unnecessary clutter...maybe.

+note+

If you want the bridge road area to be covered in snow instead of bricks without any texture mismatch (whether using this mod or not) you can easily do it yourself. Some Windhelm texture overhauls have replaced associated ground textures with snow textures, such as Noble Skyrim. …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
