Hey everyone, it’s been a while. I'm back with a very simple Skyrim Special Edition mod that somewhat surprises me that no one has done it yet.

The Volcanic Tundra region is definitely one of the hottest places in Skyrim, with boiling mineral pools, thermal fissures, and rumbling volcanic activity. While walking through the area, I thought about how cool it would be if these heat sources actually gave off a thermal deformation effect (OR HOT, AMIRITE), similar to some fires. So, I added it!

This mod changes all steam and mineral pool effect meshes, giving off subtle but very immersive thermal deformations. It really gives the impression that the steam and mineral pools are very hot. Use mods to make the boiling zone of a mineral pool take damage.

This does not change any patterns and does not use plugins. All 8 files have been changed and designed to be compatible with Mindflux's Particle Patch for Darker Nights and/or ENB (although neither is required.) I kept the files loose to make it easier to install/overwrite. They are also very small.

As an added side effect, Dwemer Ruins and other places that emit steam effects will also benefit from this subtle heat mist.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Does this apply to Oldrim/LE?

Answer: Unfortunately, no. They have to be remade for LE, but I don't currently have it installed. If someone wants to reverse engineer how I did this and release it to LE and give me some credit, I don't mind.

Q: Is this compatible with "XYZ"?

A: As long as the mod doesn't overwrite the same effects files as this, it will be compatible with everything.

Hey everyone, it's been a while.  I'm back with a very simple mod for Skyrim Special Edition, something that I was sort of surprised that nobody did yet.

The volcanic tundra area is definitely one of the hottest places in Skyrim, with its boiling mineral pools, heat cracks, and rumbling volcanic activity.  While walking through the area, I was thinking how cool (OR HOT, AMIRITE) it would be if these heat sources actually gave off a heat distortion effect, similar to how some fires do.  So, I added it!

This mod alters all of the steam and mineral pool effect meshes to emit a subtle but very ~immersive~ heat distortion.  It really gives off the impression that the steam and mineral pools are HOT.  It goes great with mods that make the boiling areas of the mineral pools hurt.

This does not alter any landscape, and does not use a plugin.  8 files have been altered in all, and have been designed to be compatible with the Particle Patch by Mindflux for darker nights and/or ENB (though neither is required.)  I kept the files loose to make installation/overwriting easier.  They are also super tiny.

As a bonus side effect, Dwemer Ruins and other places that emit steam effects will benefit from having this subtle heat haze as well.

INSTALL + OVERWRITE + ENJOY!

FAQ:

Q: Will this work in Oldrim/LE?

A: Unfortunately, no.  They would have to be re-made for LE, but I don't have it installed currently.  If someone wants to reverse-engineer how I did this, and release it for LE with a little bit 'o credits to me, I would not mind.

Q: Is this compatible with "XYZ"?

A: As long as a mod doesn't overwrite the same effect files as this, it'll be compatible with everything.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
