describe
This is a streamlined VR-compatible port of BrinaSair's excellent Undiscovered Means Unknown mod for Skyrim SE, created with permission. If you like this, please give this mod an endorsement.
This mod is for players who don't want to have their game surprised by knowing exactly what's around the next mountain. It will replace all undiscovered compass location icons with the same "?" mark. You'll know what's hidden there is worth exploring, but not whether it's an abandoned castle or a cave, a bandit camp or a bear den. Towns still appear normal.
Install
Download and install the mod manager of your choice or extract to the \data directory. No scripts are included, and no ESPs are included; it's safe to add or remove at any time.
compatibility
This mod edits the file vr_hmd_info.swf and will therefore be incompatible with any other mod that also changes this file (e.g. Less HUD VR). This is a VR version of the file containing the compass icon as well as other HUD components. At the time of creation, there isn't any SSE icon overhaul functionality to work with VR as the SE icons are located in hudmenu.gfx. If these are converted to VR at some point, a compatibility patch will be needed to replace the undiscovered icon sets.
SKYUI VR - Compatible
This should be compatible with mods that add other locations, such as Atlas Map Markers - (by kronixx) - as long as they use the base icon category.
VERSIONS
Currently 1 version: Replaces undiscovered location icons with universal symbols and removes cardinal direction titles (N, S, E, W).
This version is included because it was created by me for personal use. If there was interest (and time), I could add additional ones that remove the enemy red dot indicator, retain the cardinal direction, or remove the undiscovered icon entirely (although by stripping it off at a certain point, you might just hide the compass entirely).
Recommended MODS
Well equipped Map SE - highly recommended. Added in-game world map that can be equipped in shield slots. Now without a compass title, it's easy to get turned around in the midst of frantic combat, so you'll need to rely on your in-game map and visible landmarks to orient yourself and navigate.
HQ Skyrim Map V2 - If you're going to spend time losing your nose in the map, it should at least look good.
Point The Way - Populates the roads in Skyrim, pointing to major cities and holding very useful road signs.
Any kind of tree overhaul that expands and thickens a forest. Helps mask distant landmarks.
Note: At the time of creation, no way was found to remove player positions from the VR 3D world map. Players seeking the most immersive experience must avoid peeking and rely solely on the in-game map. Or as a feature statement, if you are hopelessly lost, your location will still be marked on the 3D world map.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
