premise:
In vanilla Skyrim, I was always very disappointed with the crappy Odahviing and Durnehviir performance in combat. They're basically overgrown mosquitoes that do little to no damage to enemies, especially at higher levels. This is because they share their attacks with enemy dragons, which are balanced with the player's health.
This mod gives Odahviing and Durnehviir their own unique Dragon's Breath attack that can deal massive amounts of damage while also greatly amplifying their melee damage. I want them to feel as dangerous to enemies as the advanced dragons feel to players. They are now able to destroy all but the strongest enemies in a single breath, even on Legendary difficulty. I love playing mods that add spawning and massive battles around the world, so dragon allies are now well worth the cry cooldown required to summon them, being able to destroy entire groups of enemies and single-handedly turn the tide of a battle in your favor.
How this works:
All of these mods create new, unique breathing sounds for Odahviing and Durnehviir that behave exactly like their vanilla counterparts, but deal over 1000 damage each, which is overkill for most weak or low level enemies, but enough to still take away enemies with the highest health. Keep in mind that they tend to do a lot of flying, so when they attack, you need to count it. Their melee damage modifier is also very high, so you can happily see them killing weaker humanoid enemies that often if they get within their bite range.
Now all this damage obviously means players and friendly NPCs die instantly if hit by it, so I took some steps to prevent that from happening. First, I added conditions for Odahviing and Durnehviir's new breath attacks, which cause them to not deal damage to the player or any of the player's minions. Normally this isn't an issue, and breathing doesn't damage non-hostile NPCs, but in early beta builds I ran into a bug where my followers would aggro my dragon in a way that would make him hostile and leave me breathless. This is an additional contingency that ensures this is unlikely to happen. I've also added Odahviing and Durnehviir to the player's alignment, which will further ensure that NPCs that are currently the player's friends and allies don't have hatred for dragon allies and vice versa (note, this change doesn't actually change the player's alignment record, so it won't conflict with other mods that change the player's alignment)
Additionally, I've implemented additional functionality into Odahviing's breath attack, which makes his initial fight in Dragonsreach work properly, so you can safely use this mod before even defeating the main quest. His breath attacks can still damage you in combat, but they won't be a one-shot kill. They will scale to your level. I implemented about 5 different breathing levels, ranging from level 15 to level 50, and I think these values are appropriate. Note that if you're playing Legendary, the damage will be very high (around 300 fire damage once you're over level 50 and not affected by your fire resistance), but on lower difficulties, even a weaker character without a healing spell should be able to survive long enough to trap him. After completing the mission, this player's scaling damage is disabled and his breath attack switches to Balance to eliminate enemies. There is no scripting involved with this mod, so don't worry, it's all done through conditions imposed on the spell effects.
The fight between Soul Cairn and Durnehviir will also work properly. The Durnehvii …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
