concept
I started thinking about adding pistols to the world of Skyrim when I first entered the ruins of the Dwemer empire, where mechanical monsters attacked me with advanced weapons, including firing exploding crossbow arrows at me. Guns, including cannons, are mentioned in The Elder Scrolls lore, including the Redguard's exploding black powder, the cannon mentioned in the Dagger Joke Book, the fireworks from Akavir, the Redguard's Cutting Cannon (source: Michael Kirkbride), and the aforementioned Dwemer crossbow bolt exploding in Skyrim.
Considering the existing lore of ancient yet highly advanced beings (the Dwemer), and the many ruins where some of these ancient artifacts can be encountered, introducing the Flintlock Soul Gem powered weapon into such a world doesn't seem like a lore-breaker.
The Dwemer Pistol is powered by the Soul Gem, the same as the Dwemer Automaton. Each time the pistol hammer hits the Soul Gem loaded in the weapon's core generator, a piece of the Soul Gem will shatter, and the energy stored in the Soul Gem will eject the fragments as projectiles that can travel considerable distances and can be fatal to some enemies.
What does the mod do?
This mod adds fourteen pistols to the world. There are many different models, all flintlock variants. Early models had six charges, a number that steadily increased as better models were discovered to the twelve-charge limit. Within this framework, the pistol's damage and value increase. The idea is to strike a balance between the relative lethality of handguns and the relatively high cost of keeping them charged. It also balances the gameplay challenge so you have to consider how best to use your weapon when facing multiple enemies.
The flintlock pistol can be carried in the left hand with a right-handed melee weapon, but can be equipped with one or two hands. Pistols may inflict fatal damage to lower-level enemies, and may inflict grievous damage to higher-level enemies, as would be expected from such a powerful enemy crafted by an early advanced society.
where to find weapons
Our goal is to seamlessly integrate the pistol into the world during some major or important faction missions. Therefore, you might find a pistol on an enemy within the Dwemer Ruins, a chest in the Dwemer Ruins, another explorer in the Dwemer Ruins, or on some powerful enemy.
Investigating Bleak Falls Barrow could be a great start to a life with gunpowder and bullets...
Please note - the Thalmor who rule the Aldmeri Dominion may also have discovered these weapons; some members of the elite Blades Company may possess some. Even a high-level mage may have one or two artifacts hidden away.
Technical Materials/Weapon Mechanics
As mentioned before, the pistol is powered (and charged) by the Soul Stone. The pistol hammer shatters the Soul Stone, causing the fragments to be fired as projectiles by the energy stored in the Soul Stone.
The "Soul Gem Split Round" creates a weapon damage effect, and I combine the basic impact damage with a stagger effect (using the Fussy Shout perk effect). Higher level pistols deal more damage and have a higher stagger effect. I named them the "Small Shards", "Coarse Shards", "Sharp Shards" and "Polished Shards" effects. Projectile impact effects are designed to look realistic, with staggered and blood splatter effects.
[Technically, the pistol functions like a reskinned staff, with the effect of a staff projectile]
Pistols do not appear when sheathed, as staves do not appear in the Skyrim world. (You can use this mod to make them display:

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
