Instant Retake is JIT, rewritten with simple ideas!

Just-in-time, remade for simplicity and ease of use.

Available for Skyrim LE and Skyrim SE.

Just-In-Time Remake (JITR) is a custom solution for switching lights using triggers and lightweight scripts. This solution allows mod authors to turn lights on/off based on the player's position/path in a certain space. This is useful because switching lights outside of the player's field of view is a way around the game's lighting limitations. Exceeding these limits can cause mesh and light flickering issues when moving around the area. JITR is the solution to this problem. It's still just-in-time, but the way everything works has been completely reworked.

What's the difference?

the term

JIT: "LightingBall" and "LightingBallController"

JITR: "Light Controller" (Controller for short) and "Light Controller Trigger" (Trigger for short)

To use JIT-Remastered, users should understand the terminology. The original name of JIT confused me a little when I first started using it. Therefore, the JITR updates the name to represent what it is doing. The controller controls the light reference. Trigger controls when the switching action occurs; "triggered" by the player. For consistency, the term is used everywhere from documentation to scripts.

Controller light reference limits

On time: 4

JITR: 128 (technically)

Due to the way the script is written, the JIT limits the number of lights that can be used per Controller to 4. JIT-Remastered has been rewritten to use arrays instead of individual light reference properties. Therefore, JITR is technically limited to 128 references per controller. I decided not to limit the scalability of the array, however, recommend that users use a realistic number of references for each Controller.

timer controller

Timer controllers work the same as in the JIT, but they have also been rewritten to use arrays and support up to 128 references.

Trigger controller reference limits

On time: 4

JITR: 128 (technically)

The same goes for triggers and controllers. Triggers use arrays, so the technical limit is 128 Controller references, but again, use real numbers when implementing this. Also, because of the way the script is written, the JIT requires at least two Controller references on the trigger. This requirement has been removed in the JIT - reworked; therefore, triggers can now use a single Controller reference if needed.

door trigger

Currently, the gate trigger functionality of the JIT is not implemented yet. The code is there, but untested and therefore hidden from the script. It may be added in a future update.

Implementation

JIT has required methods that you have to implement it. For example, references must be populated sequentially. Since JIT-Remastered uses arrays, this required implementation is eliminated. The array will be automatically populated in order, and the entire content of all scripts has been reworked to use these arrays.

script

After all the above changes, the script has been greatly simplified and optimized compared to JIT. A lot of simplification can be achieved by using arrays for all references, as well as separating the Timer functionality into its own script. Scripts are now much smaller than before and written with as few restrictions as possible. For example, the JIT LightingBall script (now called LightController) reduced over 200 lines of code, and the Trigger script reduced nearly 100 lines of code!

Most of the debugging code was stripped out along with some features because they were simply not needed after the rewrite. Most of the remaining work is rewriting the code to use arrays.

Controller/trigger settings

How to use JIT-remake

Instant Play - Remastered's main feature is the ability to switch lights based on player interaction with placed triggers. A trigger is always accompanied by one or more controllers. User will have to create new triggers in CK. When creating these new triggers, it is recommended to use a unique na …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
