The surprisingly powerful throwing ax is back
All of the following applies to both the Monarch and the Leviathan
The Monarch is a GoW/Thor style axe-thrower. It's a prototype and one of a kind, there is no other weapon like this in Skyrim
I feel like this is too unique to provide some functionality, but since I won't be making mods for the foreseeable future, I've retired it
How to use: The attack button can swing normally. Hold down the attack button for less than 1.5 seconds to throw it, or more than 1.5 seconds for a melee power swing. When thrown, it spins out of your hand and returns to your hand whether it hits an enemy, a wall, the ground, or anything in flight. It becomes a full circle, coming back to you like a boomerang, and at that moment it can be thrown again. This is very deadly. It has its own special move, which can decapitate qualified targets when thrown through a series of electron bombardments, and can be said to be or definitely a little bit OP. If someone is essential, it instead knocks them down quickly to avoid any problems there
Location: A fire pit will be on the cliff south of Rorikstead. Like any weapon, the ax is also steerable, but like the Bloodskaal Blade, the ax can also communicate with unique referees, so like the Blade, only unique weapons have abilities, i.e. only acquired unique weapons can be thrown. Wanted to mention that this question has been asked since the beta version. To avoid conflicts, I let the map markers appear later at runtime. If you don't see it on the map right away, just reload once or visit Markarth real's holding area to quickly refresh the map. When visited, a Helgen-like near-death situation occurs, at which point the monarch will arrive and decide to either help the demon knock you down, or knock its asses off into oblivion. It seems to really hate Deadra as it always chooses the latter for me
NFAQ - Not asked since it was introduced here:
Q: Why not use Thor weapons or other models
A: The original plan was to showcase a new style of play and expand massively from there, i.e. previous models were not the focus. Feel free to substitute any model you wish. The good news is though that there seems to be a public license for Leviathan, so replacing it with the model becomes optional
Q: How to change the model
A: You can do it in Nifskope. You need to copy the shape of the desired model to the weapon/projectile/activator nif so they look similar and rotate as needed. You can't just replace files. You need Skope and for me this required the model to have permissions but it only takes a few minutes
Q: Why does the ABC visual quirk occur?
A: Before I make this decision, Skyrim is not intentionally throwing things like this and TBH to make axes. I'm glad to see it can be done :) and IMO something like "best used in third person", to us, something like this is worth it. Note areas of tweaking here and there might pop up, but these quirks are minor and don't affect how the mod plays.
Q: OMG, no axe! Where did it go?
A: Very rarely, I notice this on the stump more than anything else, and yes, the ax is just on vacation. The failsafe is in place so the maximum 15 seconds will put the ax back in your hand no matter what, so don't worry
Q: The Leviathan model in my hand is a bit bulky
A: I don't want it to be shorter than the sovereign I would like, but you can easily resize the FPS model in nifskope if you want
Q: Well, the cool intro and def has the Helgen dying vibe and all that stuff, but yeah, we love the Alternate Start mod for some reason. Can we skip it?
A: Since this requires no crafting (it's time to gather materials etc.), I think a 90 second lore-friendly intro is an acceptable compromise, while a magical inventory is undesirable in practice. Not to mention it took a long time to perfect that scene
Q: The kills are very clever, but can be a bit repetitive. Mix some?
A: This describes many of the spells and weapons in the game. There are actually two KMs, onl …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
