Renamed crafted potions so that the names describe *all potion effects
This is a port of my Oldrim mod Proper potion names
The potion name in Skyrim is terrible
A little angry, Snowberries + Thistle Branch + Glowing Mushroom is
Marked as an anti-frost potion when it also provides shock
Resistance? Having to dig into your inventory instead of picking from it
your quick menu, since two potions with different effects have the same effect
name?
Tired of it?
The correct potion name will re-label any multi-potion in your inventory, and their name will actually tell you everything they do. It's that simple.
Mod Compatible
Potions can be exempted by adding them to PPNExempted
List of forms, or JFormMap.ProperPotionNames.exempted stored in JDB
User customizable
You can now exempt potions from renaming by editing the file, or choose your own names for them
Call ppnconfig.json in your Skyrim program directory. For example,
The following ppnconfig.json renames Ale to Potion of Headaches,
and exempt from the recombination-paralyzing poison.
{
"Beer": "Headache Potion",
"Paralyzing Poison": Ineffective
}
Note that the configuration file is based on the potion name, not the potion's effect.
If you have two different potions called paralysis poison and want
To exempt only one of them, the configuration file does not do that.

This is port of my Oldrim mod Proper Potion Names
Skyrim's potion names are awful
Ever been annoyed that Snowberries + Thistle Branch + Glowing Mushroom is
marked as a frost resistance potion, when it also provides shock
resistance? Had to dig through your inventory instead of picking from
your quick menu because two potions with different effects have the same
name?
Tired of it?
Proper Potion Names relabels any multiple-effect potions in your inventory with names that actually tell you everything they do. It's as simple as that.

Potions can be exempted from this behavior by adding them to the PPNExempted
form list, or to the JFormMap stored in JDB at.ProperPotionNames.exempted
User customizable
You can now exempt potions from being renamed, or choose your own names for them, by editing a file
called ppnconfig.json in your Skyrim program directory. For example, the
following ppnconfig.json renames Ale to be called Potion of Headaches,
and exempts Poison of Paralysis from being renamed.
{
"Ale": "Potion of Headaches",
"Poison of Paralysis": null
}
Notice that the config file is based on potion name, not what the potion does.
If you have two different potions called Poison of Paralysis and want
to exempt only one of them, the config file is not the way to do it.
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
