Implemented a fake "subsurface scattering" effect shader to simulate skin transparency and improve visual effects. No ENB or SKSE64 required. Lightweight, no scripts (although Modern Brawl Bug Fix is included).

A "cheap hack"

Subsurface scattering is the effect of light directly contacting and interacting with a translucent material or surface and "scattering" at the endpoints. In most cases, the result of this effect is a pinkish translucent effect when light interacts with the skin (hold your hand up to any light and you'll see it). In Classic Skyrim, this effect is produced via ENB. In Fallout 4, Bethesda introduced proper SSS controlled through material files. Unfortunately, we don't have any form of skin SSS in Skyrim Special Edition. Thankfully, with very cheap hacks and smart implementations, we can achieve similar effects. We can even do something with the relatively "flat" or "dead" skin that characters in Special Edition often point out.

The effect is very subtle, and comparing GIFs doesn't do it much justice. For this reason, I highly recommend getting into the game and seeing the changes for yourself. To toggle a shader on and off for quick and easy comparisons, you can arm or unarm it via the My Collection menu.

Require

There are no "hard" requirements technically. ENB is not required (although recommended as always), you don't need SKSE64.

Since NPC Actor detection is done through hidden effects, it is highly recommended that you download the Modern Brawl Bug Fix.

For your convenience, the Modern Brawl Bug Fix has been packaged with this mod.

compatibility

While the nature of The Letter S Six Times (the recommended name) makes it, I would consider, highly compatible with most mods, it is not compatible with any mod that relies on EffectShaders.

wet and cold

Wet and Cold have a feature that causes snow and ash to accumulate on your character model; these effects are EffectShaders and are not compatible with shaders.

However, Wet and Cold's dripping effects should be fully compatible.

Natural and atmospheric Tamriel

As of now, NAT implements a "fake" subsurface scattering effect on player characters. Technically, although they are different, you don't need to use it. Patches may come later! Supposedly you can turn it off in NAT's options. But because of this, I don't recommend combining the two (mainly because of redundancy). The mods I actually use to tweak the shaders are Obsidian Weathers and Enhanced Lights and FX.

If you want to debug the mod, use the console commands startquest ioriSSSQuest and stopquest ioriSSSQuest to switch shaders.

Removing effects from NPCs may take several minutes.

This section will be updated with known incompatibilities.

special thanks

David J. Cobb. This project was produced behind the scenes of Cobb's collaboration with Cobb Rim Lighting. I've remade this mod two or three times as I've looked around for implementations of CRL and discussed with the author himself how to implement this shader as well. I don't really release my mods, so things like documentation and building flexible systems were never a direct solution for me. Cobb is a great influence and one of the most talented and friendly developers in our community, so I highly recommend you send him credit for his contributions to the community and this project. It's nice to consider him a good friend of mine.

Daymarr. It also helps me release this file to the public because their interest in the file allows me to package everything together and release it to the public. Their characters look beautiful too. yes.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
