As the title suggests, this simple mod improves stray dogs

This little mod was inspired by DarkPhoenixx's Stray Dog Fix, I used the script included in that mod with the permission given in the statement:

"You can use this in any of your mods without asking my permission."

The original mod basically allowed you to re-recruit fired strays.

There isn't any love for Strays on SSE, so I thought I'd improve upon the original and upload something.

This mod does the same as the original - recruit wanderers as usual. If you fire it, it will go back to the last place you told it to wait. This mod allows you to talk to it again (you may need to tell it to wait twice) and when it sits "wait" you can open the conversation and have it focus on you again.

I also increased the level range of the wanderers from L10-25 to L10-50.

I offer 3 variants: Vanilla - Stray Dog, Stray Armored Husky and Stray Death Hound.

I've made a mod that requires USSEP.

The file is an .esp, but it's tagged as an .esl so it doesn't take up the mod slot.

Strays is actually World Encounter and has always been notorious for carriages losing control of dialogue, animals themselves being lost and more, see:

I found jgz's mod for Werstle Commands for Followers and Animal Companions works well with Strays, even though you can't control them via dialogue options.

This mod does not (yet) address any of these issues.

I intentionally didn't add access to Strays' inventory, or make any other such changes; there are plenty of mods for Meeko, Vigilance, etc. if you want this functionality.

This little mod was inspired by DarkPhoenixx's Stray Dog Fix, and I have used the script included in that mod here under the consent given in the statement:

The original mod basically allowed you to re-recruit dismissed Stray Dogs.

There isn't any love for Strays on the SSE, so I thought I'd improve upon the original, and upload something.

What this mod does is the same as the original - Recruit the stray as usual. If you dismiss it then it will head back to the last place where you told it to wait. This mod allows you to talk to it again (you may need to tell it to wait twice) when it sits down "waiting", you can then open the dialogue and ask it to follow you again.

I have also increased the level range on the strays from L10-25 to L10-50.

I have supplied 3 variants: Vanilla - Stray Dog, Stray Armoured Husky & Stray Death Hound.

I have made the mod to require USSEP.

The file is an.esp, but it is flagged as an.esl so it doesn't take up a mod slot.

Strays are actually World Encounters, and have always been notoriously buggy, loss of dialogue control, loss of the animal itself etc etc, see:

I have found the mod Whistle Commands for Followers and Animal Companions by jgz to work quite well with Strays, even when you can't control them via the dialogue options.

This mod does not (as yet) deal with any of these issues.

I have intentionally not added access to the Strays inventory, or made any other such changes; if you want this functionality there are plenty of mods out there for Meeko, Vigilance etc.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
