STEP is an extensive project that collects and compiles information from across the community in the form of scalable modding and "how-to" guides. These are step-by-step guides for improving Skyrim, focusing on quality and performance rather than quantity. STEP attempts to get as close to the "original" experience as possible while resolving game bugs, improving visual quality, and correcting game mechanics. Our users should always expect a better representation of the game's original concepts and mechanics when following one of our guides.
STEP SE Core Guide
The STEP SE Core Guide is the official guide to Skyrim Special Edition, providing everything you need to build an enhanced vanilla experience for the Skyrim SE platform. Currently, the guide is released in Beta version. It will be officially released as v1.0 along with the full version of STEP 3.0. Although it is a beta version, it is still the current guide in the STEP 3.0 release.

abstract
One of the main reasons for keeping our core guidelines fairly strict on the vanilla experience is to provide a stable and tested base or "baseline" to build from as a standalone mod, or to create more custom mod builds from using STEP and other mod guides created by our user community. We call these extensible guides "Core Guides" (i.e. STEP SE Core), and they only need to include the most basic modifications deemed necessary to optimize the original game graphically, gameplay, and mechanics.
The real beauty of this paradigm is that any STEP member, once approved, will be able to write their own guide and host it on the STEP 3.0 website. Think of it as a "mod guide" that will extend the idea of a "mod-guide-creation infrastructure" by using a common set of development tools to produce an almost infinite number of potential results, each with its own potential value. Own support infrastructure (i.e. forum themes, website resources, custom tools, etc.).
STEP core
Skyrim was originally created for consoles, and Bethesda has released official texture packs, patches, and modified it with the Special Edition, but they've still missed a lot. STEP Core fully enhances vanilla Skyrim for PC to do Bethesda's attempt right. In particular,... STEP Core... Bug fixes and corrections to some aspects of vanilla Skyrim. ...replaces HD assets in vanilla Skyrim form. ...improvements to existing content to improve consistency in vanilla Skyrim. ...interface module that improves your PC's menus and UI. ...is interpreted as new content that "should include" resources, and is consistent with vanilla Skyrim.
STEP Core is a comprehensive collection of game "corrections" with minimal chance of future conflicts with downstream mods. Another way to think about STEP Core is that it takes unofficial patches a step further by integrating them with other bug fixes and vanilla-friendly asset enhancements. It provides a stable base for adding to existing or creating new mod lists. ...STEP Core has nothing to do with...content that conflicts with TES lore or vanilla Skyrim lore. ...mod …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
