I've always felt like there was something missing from Skyrim's magical gameplay. You can become an ally of the Psiiic order and be the master of every magic school, but you can only acquire spells by purchasing them from other mages. Other mods have tried to mitigate this through other methods. Requiem provides you with new spells every time you gain new perks in your magic skills. Of course, the excellent spell-simulating approach adds to Skyrim's simple yet effective spell-making system from previous games. However, these mods are still missing something. Magic isn't something you can simply understand by taking a perk or crafting it to suit your every need. It's elusive, complex, it defies simplicity. In order to try to understand it, you need to do something that looks like other mages in Skyrim are doing. You need to do some research.
So, after a year and a half of coding, balancing, and testing the switch, I bring you a truly different spell-making system called Spell Research. With this system, you'll feel like you have a place in the legend when you truly become a master of magic. You'll spend days, weeks, or possibly months of your game frantically researching spells and relics just to add a spell to your repertoire. Additionally, new avenues for gameplay are opened up. You can end up role-playing as the cowardly scholar who spends all his time in a dusty tower. Once you program enough scrolls yourself using this mod's built-in scroll crafting system, you can finally utilize the scrolls effectively. Alchemists also have a reason to use this mod, as you can now dissolve items using Alembics and Cauldrons, then analyze and mix them in a Victorian system to mass-produce powerful alchemical solutions, or to further enhance your knowledge of the magical world.
In this model, spells are not simply concoctions of magic or effects, but rather each spell is a completely unique work of art, with each mage casting a slightly different version of each spell. You study how to manipulate and invoke magic, not what a "made" spell is. The system is told in terms of archetypes, the elements and techniques you need to understand in order to cast spells. There are many ways you can discover and study these elements and techniques. You can spend several days in the game learning your own spells in the comfort of your tower. You can dissolve and analyze a large number of ingredients and potions that you have stored. Or you can go out and find and study ancient texts, tomes, and artifacts.
Once you discover and research enough Archetypes, you can create amazing papers. Using these you can try to form a spell. The paper you use will determine what kind of spell you are trying to find, and the level of the spell. Even this isn't cut and dry. Spell composition is not an easy task, and by default you will need to spend a lot of experimentation and effort to compose your first spell. Even then, you may not be entirely successful. The spells you end up with will be drawn from your favorite spell model's spell library using the archetype you used.
You can also use the added alchemy system to gain more experience, or gain powerful solutions. Using added Alembic or Cauldron you can dissolve discovered ingredients and artifacts into the distillate. You can then analyze these liquids to learn more about spell research, or you can attempt to use them to create and eventually mass-produce powerful alchemical ingredients.
Adventurers will also be able to use this system, as they will find several relics of past experiments and research. Use these to gain more knowledge about spell research, or sell them to a se …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
