Overview
Spell Research is one of my favorite mods. It adds so much to the Magic game that it feels like DLC and I think it's a must-have for any Mage game. However, I thought some details could be improved, so I made this patch. Changes include the following:
During academic activities (just like when sleeping), the screen now fades to black - for greater immersion.
Messages/notifications are in first person rather than third person.
Alembics provide alchemical experience (when refining solutions, creating flutes, etc.) - using this method makes more sense for advancing alchemy than creating countless poisons that can never be used.
If you have enough materials, refining recipes now have a '30 to 10' version - it's easy to get hundreds of solutions after dissolving a lot of ingredients, and refine them with the default '3 to 1' recipe. It's much faster when you can extract more at once.
Recipes for "downgraded" solutions ("2 to 1") are now only visible if you have the "Herbal Guide to Skyrim" book in your inventory - I never need them, and they tend to get in the way when refining. I don't want to remove them entirely, so adding an extra requirement for them to appear seems like the best way to handle them.
The weight of these papers and rolls is reduced - a single roll is as heavy as a complete book with a leather cover. So now a roll weighs 0.1 (it's 1 vanilla) and these weights depend on how much paper is written on them (0.1-0.5).
I added a novice change spell that turns a destroyed/burnt book into 2 rolls of paper. While this isn't strictly necessary as you can use the books directly for writing, it's in addition to my weight variation - each book weighs 2, and there are a lot of them in some dungeons, making it easy to reach carrying capacity. If you turn them into rolls, it will weigh 10 times less. This spell can only be obtained through research.
You can fully recover from mental exhaustion if you sleep 8 hours or more - I see a lot of people complaining about mental exhaustion and wishing it away, but I personally think it makes sense that it's included - its real question is how long recovery takes. Often even 12 hours is not enough, and this is not great for demand patterns. If you don't like the default value of 8, you can change it by typing _SR_GlobalExhaustionRecoverySleptHours to
Manual installation
Extract the archive into the Skyrim Special Edition\Data folder.
compatibility
Incompatible with editing anything from the same record and master spell research script (_SR_QuestScript.pex). The only thing that can be done right now is the experience book, but I've provided a patch. Installed and loaded it after my add-ons and books, and let it overwrite the script.
All files are tagged ESL (ESP-FE format) so they are not limited to 254 by the plugin.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
