Change spell absorption effects so that they do what their description says they do, rather than completely negating the incoming spell and adding their full mana cost to your pool when it occurs.

Spell absorption as described

SKSE is required!

The various variations of spell absorption in the game increase the "AbsorbChance" cast value, and the way this effect interacts with the way those effects are described is very inconsistent.

Get the Atronach perk from the Alteration tree: "Absorb 30% of the magic from any spell that hits you." I don't know about you, but to me this should mean that 30% of the spell's magic cost is transferred to your mana pool, restoring it if possible, but the spell still comes through as normal. Well, maybe reducing the power of the effect would be nice, but unfortunately I don't think that could have been scripted (oops, spoilers!). Furthermore, this is the job of the drag effect.

But the value of this actor is very similar to the role in Oblivion or even Morrowind. The amount of "AbsorbChance" you have is the percentage at which an incoming spell will be completely negated and its full mana cost transferred to your mana pool. It's like Resist Magic on steroids, like that weird power that comes from an advanced D&D spellcaster. Disease, dragon cry, anything can be swept away by it.

This mod redirects the spell absorb magic effects to be implemented using a script that better matches its description. When a hostile spell is activated by a spell absorb effect, your mana pool will be replenished by the corresponding percentage of the spell's mana cost. That is to say:

Mana Restoration Spell Hit == All your spells Absorb Effect' Size * Spell's Mana Cost / 100

Presumably this will be reduced when highly skilled spellcasters cast spells, as the magic cost decreases with their skills and perks. Spell effects can still come through and generally deal damage to you, so that's a big help for this effect, but I think it's less misleading now. I also redesigned the description of Miraak's clothing enchantment.

Due to scripting limitations (or maybe my ignorance), the "No Absorb/Reflect" flag on the spell now doesn't do anything when encountering these absorption effects, but the main purpose of the flag is to make sure the effect is consistent so it's not a big deal. Also, I just patched some effects in the vanilla game so it doesn't affect the new spell absorption effects like the Curios component from CC. Well, if you're interested, you can paste the script together.

However, I chose to leave the effect of the Bretons' Dragonskin power supply at its default value using AbsorbChance. This is a greater power that can only be used for 1 minute per day, so I think their ability to completely negate spells in that short window is a nice buff.

If you've read all of this and passionately disagree with this change, I applaud you for...something, I don't know.

Spell Absorption as Described

Requires SKSE!

The various variants of Spell Absorption in the game work by raising the "AbsorbChance" actor value, and the way this works vs. what these effects describe is quite at odds.

Take the Atronach perk from the Alteration tree: "Absorb 30% of the magicka of any spells that hit you." I don't know you, but to me this should mean 30% of the spell's magicka cost gets transferred to your magicka pool, restoring it if possible, but the spell still gets through as usual. Ok, maybe a reduction in the effects' power would be nice, but unfortunately I don't think that's possible to script (oops, spoilers!). Besides, that's the job of the resistance effects.

But this actor value works pretty much the same as it did back in Oblivion and even Morrowind. The magnitude of "AbsorbChance" you have is the percentage chance that an incoming spell will be completely negated, and its full magicka cost transferred to your magicka pool. It's like Resist Magic on steroids, ac …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
