Skyrim random character generator for roguelike games

by dark0neisvirgin·v1.0·Updated 2019-02-05

I made a random character generator that does a better job than anything else I've found on Google. You no longer gain the Block skill when your character's primary weapon is a bow, or the Academy of Winterhold as a faction when your character is a warrior. There are also optional challenges.

=About this document=. ==========

As a Skyrim player who has played the game a few times, I've never been able to find a decent random character generator that I'm really happy with. What frustrates me is that I searched for so long and couldn't find a suitable one that I liked, which is why I finally said, "This is it, I'll create one myself." So I spent a weekend working on it. The ideas I wrote down on my notepad started to pile up as I came up with more features, like very rare builds and challenges. Finally, I created this program for myself in C++ and decided to share it.

Keep in mind that this isn't exactly a "mod" per se - which is why I'd classify it as a utility - but rather an .exe file that you'll run and it will give you a bunch of stats on a black screen about the characters you should build on your next playthrough.

At first glance, it all looks simple, but there's quite a bit of thought involved.

First, it randomizes your character;

-Race

  • Appearance (presets can be selected on the "Character" menu)

-Game style

-1 or 2 primary weapon skills (they will complement each other, you will never get one and two hands at the same time)

-Armor skills

-5 skills (total)

-3 mandatory customs declaration lines

  • Random challenges

-and whether your character can use followers and pillars

But it will randomize these things in a consistent and logical way. For example, how would it do this:

If your character doesn't have skills like Sneaking or Lockpicking, you most likely won't get Thieves Guild as a required class.

If your character uses archery or magic as his primary way of hurting things, he won't get Brok.

If your character is a melee character, in order to balance his equipment, he will not be allowed to transform into a werewolf, but he will have the opportunity to overpower the vampire master transformation. Vice versa also applies to range-oriented characters, and there's also a chance that classes like warhorses will be allowed to have either character.

Your character is almost always lethal (contrary to some random factors on the internet). There are a few support classes, but they are generally rare and followers are always allowed.

Since this is a utility program intended for Roglier's crossover, these random attributes are your house rules and limit your current character's playthrough. If you have a sword as the weapon type your character wields, that means you can't use magic or a battle axe. The same goes for armor and robes. There are no restrictions on rings and necklaces. You have a total of 5 skills, which means you can only assign extra skills to these 5 skills, and you absolutely can't assign extra skills to any other skills outside of this list (don't worry, the weapon and armor skills you draw will also appear on this list). If you don't have Alchemy as a skill, your character is not allowed to brew potions. The same goes for crafting weapons and armor, improving weapons and armor, and the same goes for magic and disillusionment. If your character doesn't have the Sneaking, Pickpocketing, and Lockpick skills, you can still do those actions, you just can't give them any additional benefits.

The run is considered successful when you complete all 3 mandatory tests.

If you die, you should get rid of you …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
