JK's Skyrim by Leafeater - ELFX Exterior Patch

JK's Skyrim is one of Skyrim SE's most popular city overhauls to date (if not the most popular). Combined with enhanced lighting and FX you can have some stunning cities. However, for those who prefer to use ELFX's ELFX-Exteriors.esp, on the outside you get clipping, lighting duplication, horrible shadow pop-in, and light sources without any light. This is very noticeable at night. For me it ruined the experience and the shadow pop ended up giving me a headache. Of course there is a patch to convert JK to vanilla lighting, but there are still issues when using ELFX Exteriors.esp is more than just changing areas and adding lights.

What does this mod do?

lighting restoration

This mod will change the position of light sources from ELFX Exteriors, JK's Skyrim, and even some vanilla lighting to give off a better atmosphere, not only fixing cuts and removing unnecessary light sources, but it will also help reduce that nasty shadow pop Skyrim is known to have. *(Really Bethesda? You can't let us see more than 4 light sources...come on...)

improve!

I'm also trying to change some of the lighting so that the type of light it displays looks better with certain light sources and placements. I've always hated how a lantern lit by a small candle will light up an entire room, but a flame lit by a brazier will illuminate half the light. So I changed some of the light sources to give off a more realistic atmosphere. However, these changes shouldn't have a negative impact on the beautiful world you see in Skyrim, nor will they directly change any values.

What doesn't this mod do?

Torch problem

This mod can only help reduce pop-up content and remove annoying shadow lines. It's not perfect, but the changes in all cities should be better. However, this mod does not change the lighting issues caused by torches. I suggest, if it's too much trouble, to install a mod that disables guards from carrying torches at night. You'll notice a huge improvement when there are no torches, but once the guard walks past a patrol holding a torch, the problem may reoccur. However, I still struggle to help eliminate this annoying shadow line (or no light reflection at all)

Lighting and smoke bursts

Smoke from braziers and campfires has been finicky since the creation of Skyrim. This mod attempts to help reduce the prevalence of nighttime smoke, but they are still noticeable. The only solution is to install a module that completely eliminates smoke or handles it.

Transform ELFX lighting and interior design

This mod does not change anything related to ELFX and how it looks. When using ELFX Exteriors it only changes the placement of some light sources or even eliminates them. The light value does not change, nor does the radius. (etc.) I also didn't touch anything indoors because I had no reason to. That's not the purpose of this mod.

But Leafeater, why don't you just restore the vanilla lights using the patches already on JK Skyrim?

Because this does not change the clipping caused by ELFX Exteriors. All it does is get rid of JK's light source, which I don't like. Modified Skyrim should not revert to vanilla lighting when we have the resources to prevent it. Additionally, ELFX Exteriors not only change the position of the vanilla lights, but also the lighting textures of the boost lights and FX themselves. I find they match my ENB better and are more realistic, making window lights more visible from a distance for example. Plus, I guess. Why isn't it right?

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
