The Legendary Edition's #1 moon texture mod comes into Special Edition - now with GLOW!

This is the first mod I've ever created and released, so updating it 5 years later is a bit surreal. I've been asking for a glow version for a while now, but slowly but surely, I've finally finished the add-on.

The 4K resolution provided by the original is absolutely unnecessary and actually causes artifact issues since satellites don't use mip maps. As such, they are available at standard 2K resolution, which is 4x the native resolution and more than adequate.

Install

2K resolution, loose files, plug and play.

Note that for the GLOW version, the surface area of the moon texture had to be reduced to make room for the glow effect around the edges. Therefore, this version comes with a plugin that scales it back to its original size. The plugin is an ESP labeled ESL so it doesn't take up a load order slot, just two game settings to adjust, iMasserSize and iSecundaSize.

I personally don't use this plugin because I really like the satellites to be smaller! I recommend disabling the plugin after installation to see how you prefer smaller satellites.

If the ENB satellite you are using seems too bright, try going to the [Sky] settings and messing around with MoonIntensityNight. Some ENBs bend it to simulate the glow on vanilla textures, so the brightness may need to be turned down.

Additional Information

For those who are curious, the moons in Skyrim are not 3D objects with wrapped textures and lights, but flat static images, so each phase of each moon was created individually (14 in total, which is why I don't think there are many moon textures out there yet!) You may also recognize parts of Mars and Enceladus, which also use original textures. Thanks to NASA for the excellent high-resolution photography as the terrain source!

enjoy your meal!

DESCRIPTION

The #1 moon texture mod for Legendary Edition comes to Special Edition -- now with GLOW!

This was the first mod I ever created and released, so it's a bit surreal to be updating it over 5 years later.  Glowing versions have been requested for quite some time, and slowly but surely, I've finally completed that add-on.

The original offered 4K resolution, which was absolutely unnecessary, and in fact caused artifact problems as the moons do not use mip-maps.  As such, these are offered at standard 2K resolution, which is 4x vanilla and MORE than enough resolution.

INSTALLATION

2K resolution, loose files, install-and-go.

Note that for the GLOW version, the surface area of the moon texture had to be reduced in order to make room for the glow effect around the edges.  As such, a plugin comes with that version to scale them back up to their original size.  This plugin is an ESP flagged as an ESL so it does not take up a load order slot, and simply adjusts two game settings, iMasserSize, and iSecundaSize.

I personally do NOT use this plugin, as I really enjoy the moons being a bit smaller!  I suggest disabling the plugin after installation to see how you like the moons being a little smaller.

If the moons seem too bright with the ENB you're using, try going to the [Sky] settings and mess with MoonIntensityNight.  Some ENBs crank this up to emulate glow on the vanilla textures so it might need toning down.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

For those curious, the moons in Skyrim are not 3D objects with a wrapped texture and lighting, but flat static images, so each of the phases for each moon were created separately (14 in all -- which is why I don't think there are many moon retextures!) You may also recognize parts of Mars and Enceladus, which the original textures utilized as well. Thanks to NASA for their insanely high resolution photography as a terrain source!

Enjoy!

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
