Overview

This mod does a few things:

Create scrollbars for every spell in Skyrim and DLC that may have scrolling but don't yet.

Match the size of the scroll with the equivalent spell, as most scrolls are ridiculously underpowered.

Have players craft scrolls they've seen before in some form.

Scrollwriting

The scroll is a non-renewable spell. You have to be prepared in advance so that you can cast when needed.

Given this, I have some limitations on my scrolling (all configurable in MCM):

You must know the scroll in some form, either by disenchanting the scroll or knowing the spell. Disenchanting scrolls will remove them and give you a fixed number of enchanting experiences, also configurable. While this number may seem small, simply learning all the reels in the game will add many fascinating levels as you progress. If you know the spell, the reason behind crafting the scroll is that you may not be casting magic in combat often because it's just within your grasp or from a school where you don't have any privileges, or you may just prefer to use your magic on other, more important spells.

You must have the skills to make scrolls. For example, Firebolt is an apprentice destruction spell, and crafting a Firebolt scroll requires 25 points in the Enchantment skill or 20 points in the Destruction skill. The exact requirements for each threshold are configurable in MCM.

You have to have magicka stored in the scroll. This can be done in several ways. The options are to use your own max magicka, fill soul gems, or just disable this requirement as it was very unpopular in older versions. Do whatever you want, I don't judge.

Magicka shrink is probably the most realistic version of my creation scroll, you can store your own magicka in the scroll to create the scroll. This will temporarily reduce your maximum mana amount by a configurable amount based on the skill level of the roll. Mana reduction decreases by 10 points every few hours (again, configurable) until you are fully mana-free.

To learn or create a new scroll, you need to use Scrollwriter or Scroll of Inscribing. You may need to craft something or re-enter the menu after learning a scroll to be able to craft it; this is a limitation of the game and I don't know what I can do to change it. Inscribing scrolls can be crafted on an editor and are considered an Apprentice level cost. Scrollwriters can be found near the Court Wizard and in the Major Hold Capitals in the Arcanaeum. More may be included in future updates.

Making a scroll requires a roll of paper and ink. Inks can be created in cooking pots, either by spawning 3 inks from an inkwell, or by spawning 10 inks from a combination of iron ore and firewood. This recipe is basically an approximation of Iron Gall Ink, which is a reasonable source for Skyrim's dark inks and, more importantly, is easy to make with common materials for a simple in-game recipe.

Finding scrolls is difficult in the vanilla game. I know this. This is the main reason I created Project: Illiteracy, the most consistent source of paper rolls I can offer you.

compatibility

Roll don't suck - no. An earlier mod of mine, but its functionality is completely superseded by this mod.

Early versions of this mod - absolutely nothing. I just went ahead and remade the mod since it's easier with what I know now to do than changing the old version.

Any other mod sees the empty space next to Farengar's stuff and puts stuff there - no. But it's easy to patch. In the new version, the scrollwriter is a single grid that you can move to any position.

jContainers - Not required, but allows you to save settings in MCM if installed.

integral

Simon Magus for the screenshot and for reminding me that I love scrolling and have a scrollwriting mod that I should update.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
