Not only is this a work in progress, but it's also my first mod. While I don't mind constructive feedback, please keep this in mind in posts and bug reports, and bear with me while I finalize everything.

describe

-------------------

The idea of this mod is to make runes very interesting. Especially interesting for a stealth character to have in their arsenal. The thing is, this may be an apprentice-level spell, but you need 234 points of Magicka to even use your first Fire Rune. There are only half as many people with the right perks, but you'll first need to be destructive enough to get there. Therefore, they are not really useful for anyone starting out on the adventure.

Meanwhile, on the other end, while they're certainly powerful, you'll eventually need to use a few of them to take down one of the higher-level opponents in the game. Sure, you can blow them up with a storm or something like that, but then you lose the satisfaction of setting up traps and making everyone kill themselves for themselves. The purpose of this mod is to give runes functionality throughout the game. There may still need to be some balance, and I'd be tempted to change the radius of the actual runes. However, seeing as this is the first (and only) mod I plan to do, it's probably beyond my capabilities.

underlying knowledge

--------------------

Novices can practice using rune seals when they have not yet fully mastered the mechanics of the more powerful rune spells used by other mages. These marks deal significantly less damage than full spells, but are also cheaper to cast. Aspiring mages may find that they don't mind the trade-offs, just to get the adventure started on the right foot.

Rune Circles are the result of expert mages regularly observing and using rune spells, and learning how to refine them into truly outstanding demonstrations of power and artistry. These circles deal significantly more damage than the base spell, but require concentration to create and cost more than their fair share of Magicka. Mages are happy to use them long-term for adventuring, as they are proven (albeit expensive) tools.

--------------------

detail

--------------------

+All spells are duplicates and edited versions of vanilla rune spells. Some of them have very long names that may not show up in the store, but I've kept the names consistent to make them easily searchable in the console. It helps that all the weaker spells are called "[rune type] Rune Mark" and all the weaker spells are called "[rune type] Rune Circle".

+ Added 6 rune markers:

-Fire rune mark

-Frost Rune Mark

-Shocking Rune Mark

-Rune Runes*

-Rage Rune Mark

-Grey Rune Mark

Usually about half the base spell power, and usually costs half as well. Minimize level requirements as much as possible. Runemark of Fury and Runemark of Ash are not available at the novice level because their base spells are higher than other spells.

+ Added 6 rune circles:

-Fire Rune Circle

-Frost Rune Circle

-Shocking Rune Circle

-Poison Rune Stone Circle*

-Chaos Rune Circle

-Ash Rune Circle

Usually a little stronger than twice the strength, and less expensive than twice the magicka. But they take 3 seconds to cast, and you need both hands. (Probably beyond my current skill set and may allow for dual casting perks to impact later). Most of them are available at the Expert level, but, again, the Mayhem Rune Circle and Ash Rune Circle are only available at the Master level since their basic spells start at a higher level.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
