greeting,
This is a port of one of my favorite mods from Oldrim, Perk-Pointless Smithing. I finally took the time to learn how to port it so I can use it with SSE.
Forging seems too easy in my opinion and it makes you incredibly powerful. You make a million iron daggers and boom, you're a master smith. This mod prevents this from happening. You have to (literally) search the world to learn the various metalworking techniques available. It gives mods like Honed Metal a lot more versatility since you can't easily craft the equipment yourself.
I have tested the functionality and it works fine. I didn't check the location of the books, mostly because I wasn't sure where they were. I just want others to use it. I may expand this mod later as I feel it has a lot of potential.
This mod is not compatible with other mods that change vanilla perk trees. Like a lobbyist.
I hope you enjoy this work by SarthesArai as much as I do!

PerkPointLess Smithing greatly changes the blacksmithing skill. You can no longer spend extra points on the blacksmith tree, but instead need to gain knowledge from the various books added by this mod. While many blacksmiths sell books on common armor (such as steel or leather), more complex armor and weapon styles (such as dwarf or ebony) are harder to find. Nearly all improveable items now have perks that grant improved rewards (at the grindstone or workbench), and some items that couldn't be crafted in the vanilla game can now be crafted once you know the appropriate perks. Perks can be learned even if the blacksmithing skill is below the vanilla requirements, however, some perks require you to know the perks beyond what is required. Most perk books are horizontal in appearance, so don't expect to be running around in level 1 glass armor.
Details of material styles, in alphabetical order (vanilla perks used in brackets):
Bonemold (-): Bonemold armor is a Dunmer specialty, so its Perk Book can be found in various Dunmer locations. Improved anti-bone armor is required to complete its respective tasks and requires exquisite perks.
Chitin (-): Chitin armor, like Bone Mold, is a tradition of hard rubber and can be found in the Perk book in its place.
Daedric Smithing: In Skyrim, little is known about Daedric's armor and weapon crafting. It can only be found in certain shrines and requires knowledge of forging ebony gear.
Dawnguard: Dawnguard armor can be crafted if you have the Dawnguard add-on installed and you sided with the Dawnguard during Bloodlines. Both light and heavy versions require steel smithing and leather smithing benefits.
Dragon Armor: The Dragon Smith can currently only be found in the Hall of Valor at the end of the main quest, and can be found in the Sky Harbor Temple once you reach level 50.
Draugr Smithing (-): Draugr Smithing can craft and temper ancient Norse armor and weapons as well as ancient Norse honed weapons (can be crafted with a Smithing skill of 30). It can be found in the draugr crypt.
Dwarven Smithing: Dwarven Smithing requires Steel Smithing and can be found within Dwarven Ruins.
Ebony Smithing: Little is known about Ebony Smithing in Skyrim, although it is more common in Morrowind. Once you reach higher levels, perk books can be found in certain places that Shanmer refugees pass through or stay at. The Ebony Smith perk also improves the tempering of Nightingale gear.
Elven Smithing: Items commonly referred to as "Elven" are actually from Altmer. Therefore, Elven Smithing's books can be found in various places in Thalmor.
Falmer (-): Falmer crafts Chorus chitin armor and weapons. Their knowledge can be found in the dwarven ruins they took over. The Smithing skill of Falmer Honed Wea …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
