Version 2 has been released! This mod now has the option to install four different houses. You can choose one, two, three or even all four.
================================================== ================================================== ==========
If you like roleplaying Skyrim like me, then this mod is for you.
I always have the problem that I don't have anywhere to store them. So my solution was to always get a house, but this created some new problems:
Problem 1: The houses you get in Skyrim always come at a steep price for beginners.
Problem 2: The houses you get from mods usually just give you a house for free or search for a key and still get a fully furnished house. Not suitable for role play.
So my solution is this little mod.
You may have ventured past Whiterun (where you fought your first dragon in the main quest) and came to this house:
Well, no, you can restore the house to this and use it as your own:
This mod allows you to build your own STARTER home. Yes, starter home. This is just the first step since it's small and doesn't have a lot of features, which means you can use it in almost every other player's home until you can get the other players. It needs to be cheap and easily accessible resources.
If you like this mod then please endorse it so we can spread the joy!
Require
Hearthfires DLC (must be able to build this home - won't work without it)
The latest Skyrim SE
feature
- Close to Whiterun for easy early game play
- Fixed houses and fences
- Horse stability (if you steal one, you may only have one at this stage)
- kitchen and dining area
- a bedroom and study (by study, I mean a chest with chairs to store books and you can sit and read)
- Yard with training dummies
- All containers in the house, except trash cans, can be safely stored. No seriously, don't put something there that you want to keep there, you'll loosen it. After three days, it is added to the inventory.
- In the house of Winterhold you can build yourself on the shipwreck. This is the only house of the four that does not have a loading door, meaning you can enter any part of the house without going through a loading door. Search the wreckage first as there may be some resources available.
- Rift's residence is located at Heartwood Mill, west of Riften. Someone started building a cabin here, but it seems he was killed. Maybe a dark bromance? Take over the deed and complete the build for your own home.
- Reech's house located northeast of Karthwasten. From there follow the path to the north and when you reach the bridge you should see it by the river. If you want to know what happened there then just find the journal before repairing the house and maybe it will help you find the deed to the land.
compatibility
Run anything except what might be in the same space.
I'm not sure if there are any quests related to the original chest you found at this location, if anyone knows please let me know.
Install
Use whatever mod manager you are using and run the FOMOD installer.
uninstall
If for some strange reason you want to get rid of the mod, simply delete the Revun - Build Your Starter House.esp file from your Data folder, along with the two scripts located at:
data/scripts/
- tdRervun_BYOH_Script.pex
- tdRervunGarbageBinScript.pex
But just use the mod manager, it's that easy.
Make sure you're far away from home when doing this and not... say inside. This is the same as deleting your security files.
Known issues
I have no idea.
notes
Always save and back up your save files before trying a new mod!
I placed a rock and dirt block on the north side of the house. For stone, look for rocky areas, for clay, just look for water.
I didn't change the vanilla navmesh, I just moved it away and handmade my own new navmesh for the affected cells.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
