Queering Tianji - Blue Flower Necklace

by Tathrin·v1.0·Updated 2019-07-29

A new collapsible necklace has been added to the game to help queer male and non-binary players show off their pride. Sweep the gentlemen of Skyrim from under their feet and from their drab little heterosexual lives! This necklace works the same way AMULET OF MARA does in tempting marriage propositions...but only for male NPCs!

If you're familiar with my previous Queering Skyrim mod, you may already be aware of the discussion about the possibility of creating an entire floral culture for Nordic queers. I think this is a great idea but don't know where to start. Lavender = lesbian is easy, thanks to the historical use of the term "lavender menace" in the 1970s, and by gay feminists, but I can't translate any other weird connections to specific flowers or types of flowers. So I turned to Handkerchief Code as a place to start, the basic blue gave me a nice easy jump to blue pebbles. While "blue = masculine" is a relatively modern idea, Skyrim's fictional setting isn't actually historically accurate to our world, so who cares that blue was considered a feminine color in medieval Europe? The Nords could use a blue boy if they wanted to, dammit! That's what I mean, not a better idea.

If anyone has suggestions for further expansion of Nordic floral culture, please share! I would love to continue this theme!

"Keep love in your heart. Life without it is like a garden without sunlight, when the flowers die." - Oscar Wilde

Craftable: Build one for yourself that only requires a handful of blue mountain flowers, a leather strip to twist into rope, and a steel ingot to incorporate into the pendant! There's no need to tinker with levels; as long as you choose the right materials on your way to Helgen (or wherever you start), you can gradually build up from the first forgery you encounter in the game. It will appear under the jewelry section of your crafting menu.

Built-in enchantment: Since it's craftable from the start and the materials are easy to get, I made a pretty tame enchantment

Overwhelmed by lower level characters (a little bit of persuasion, a little extra weight). But like most jewelry, it weighs very little, so you can keep it in your inventory while you go on adventures, and put it back when you hit town to flirt with all those dashing men! And I do mean flirting - because thanks to DreamLikeDragon and Summerwolf for letting me go through the quest editing process, this necklace doubles as Mara's talisman in a seductive marriage proposition - but only for male NPCs!

(Yes, of course the NPCs still refer to it as the "Amulet of Mara" in their conversations - but since Mara is the goddess of love, this is still the Amulet of Mara, not the Amulet of Mara, so technically...)

Error alert:

"Not going to lie, I am. What about you?" Your spouse no longer speaks the conversational response out loud, so when I adjust my marriage assignments, I have to mix things up a bit. The mission itself still works perfectly (see the new screenshots for proof) and I just had to reconnect a missing conversation. I don't know what to do, so give me some time (or advice!) to figure out a solution. In the meantime, the mod works - you just need to have a moment of silence, where there should be speech. Feel sorry!

compatibility:

Should be compatible with everything, as it uses vanilla materials (Zenithar's Amulet retexture) and comes as a standalone new project, but if you encounter any conflicts, please let me know! There may be minor conflicts with other mods that change the marriage quest, but this is unlikely. If you do have other similar mods installed and encounter any issues, try swapping their loading order!

(Note that there are no gameplay barriers that prevent female characters from wearing this; I don't want to get in the way of how you express your character's gender or any mods you might implement for more gendered player options to make some kind of switch, especially considering Bethesda sets everything up as very limited gender bi …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
