I've always thought of Winstad Manor as a perfect hearth room, with its shadowy marshes and the sound of waves spreading all around. It's the perfect location for a frost mage, necromancer or vampire - dark, cold, mysterious and beautiful.
However, I have always hated the interior of the house! All Hearthfire Houses look drab, ridiculously green, and full of useless clutter. To make matters worse, most of our mods focus on Lakeview Manor, so I had no choice but to make my own mod for Winstad. One year later, my overhaul of Windstad was finally completed. The end result is a warm, welcoming house that feels more fitting for a dragon. Not too fancy, not too simplistic. That's right. I'm now considering the final version of this mod, and unless some major bugs are discovered, there will be no additional improvements or updates for 1.8.
Main changes I made:
Appearance
The Horkers were moved away from the shoreline and functional lighting was added to the exterior. Now you can actually see the lights, even if you're using a mode that makes the night darker. Version 1.2 added additional lighting and additional ores. Version 1.4 added a path to the house from the main road near Dawnstar Royal Camp, all the way to Highgate Ruins. It also has its own lighting, so even on the darkest nights, you can always find your way home. Version 1.4 also adds safe storage space near the outdoor smelter. Version 1.4 adds a new campsite in the fishery. The area has been completely redone and landscaped. You have three lovely views, along with a roaring fire and some choice wine. Bring your spouse or entourage and enjoy the scenery. Version 1.8 also adds some secure storage in the campground, as I personally am used to gathering building materials before purchasing a house. Some storage and lighting have been moved to accommodate the Windstad Exterior Additions. Also added in 1.8 is a letter and gem located in the bandit house near Stormcloak's camp, making it immersive when playing with Windstad Mine.
light
Day and night cycles are added throughout the house, similar to the lighting system in ELFX. I begged the author of this mod for years to change the Hearthfire lighting, but since they never did I finally learned how to do it myself. It's not easy with a house like this, but I didn't want any flickering lights or weird issues. Therefore, depending on your ENB or reset settings, the lighting may be too dim or too bright. Some areas of the house don't get much light at all, but that's actually what I wanted. I'd love to make other versions of the lighting if enough people ask for it, but so far that's what everyone seems to be doing. This mod is fully compatible with ELFX, apparently, as of now.
Entrance
Less clutter, more functionality. I added three more shrines - Mephala, Azura and Boethiah. The entry now feels more like a living room than a trophy room, but there's room for your beloved treasures, too. Added a small bookcase and 3 functional planters, idle, plus Morthal Banners because you are Thane after all.
dining room
Six extra seats were added and replaced by an ugly fireplace reminiscent of Dragonsreach. Less clutter and more organized furniture can be found in the dining room. The fire is bright at night, softer during the day. You can now hear Tavern music because it only makes sense if you hire a bard. Version 1.2 added additional idlers for bards, pets, and bard spectators.
Kitchen/behind the scenes
Added a kitchen with bar, oven and plenty of storage so now you don't need to build one. Your entourage and spouse can relax at the bar and enjoy a delicious drink. Custom storage for wine, ingredients, baked goods, breads and vegetables and more.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
