OSA is an engine that increases Skyrim's potential in many ways. At its core, it is an animation framework that allows developers to have greater control, effects and usability in animated scenes. This ties into OSA's PERSONA system, which adds depth to the character personalities available in Skyrim. Almost the entire OSA engine exists and runs within Skyriim's UI, which offers many benefits compared to Skyrim's Papyrus. This makes the UI for interactive display, navigation and customization accessible to all aspects of the project.

Shinji72 has put together a really nice short video showing what OSA can do with some of the highlights of the first few modules and the use of the OSA engine.

Thank you Shinji, it's an eternal honor. Hey! Don't forget to subscribe to Shinji's channel he is the best.

TooneyMan made a great video today on installing OSA and OSex for anyone who needs help with the process:

SKSE (latest), SKYUI (latest), FNIS (5.5 or higher)

Once you have any requirements for installing OSA with any mod manager program, run FNIS and you're good to go. Make sure to uninstall and delete any previous versions of OSA.

Although OSA is based on ActionScript, there is no ActionScript or scripting/programming required to build for any part of the OSA project. It operates by reading text documents in XML and INI formats that the engine is able to interpret. If you can type a text document, you have access to most of what this engine can do. Everything from animated scenes, facial expressions, speech and personalization is stored in text documents. In many ways, you can think of OSA as an extension of your authoring toolkit, adding new XML base form types.

The project is mainly an animation framework, but to make the engine, especially the PERSONA part, some roots needed to be set up for Skyrim. While the UI has access to these, I'll take the opportunity to apply information gathered in other ways outside the scope of the animation. PROFILE and MyOSA are examples of extended and quality life segmentation. While these are outside the scope of the animation, they are outputting information to something that OSA already has a connectivity foundation for.

the term:

OSA: The ActionScript engine, which runs everything OSA does. It is primarily a system for loading and interpreting XML and INI text documents to allow for a large amount of customization and detail. It doesn't do much on its own other than providing its quality of life UI display functionality.

Modules: Different mods, modules are groups of animated scenes loaded into OSA, similar to putting cartridges into the NES. (Actually it's closer to Sonic and Knuckles' cassettes for the sega origins, you could insert another sonic cassette on top of the sound and knuckles and in the previous sonic it was knuckles) Once installed they can be used in 3 ways, the player can Bind to a hotkey (if they are using 2 or less actors), players can call any installed module from the target menu, and thirdly all OSA modules automatically get custom APIs that external developers can call to make scenes happen, such as Skyrim's extended animation library. The module is ESPLESS and does not need to be used via the API.

Plug-ins: Plug-ins are extension packages for specific modules. This allows for grouping large items into categories and allows you to adopt more niche content without having to embed weird stuff into the main package or sort different themes so users can decide.

PERSONA: XML document that provides enhanced personality data for NPCs. They offer a range of courses for different personality parts and are installed individually. NPCs can have custom roles just for them, but if none are assigned, OSA will generate automatic roles based on all installed role data.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
