About this mod Machine translation

Have you ever thought that your dragons and draconic friends could absorb the souls of slain dragons just like you? Now they can.

Overview

This mod allows the NPC of your choice to be able to absorb the dragon soul when the dragon is killed - just like the player. Absorbing souls increases shout damage by 1% each time (as long as their shout magic effect has the MagicShout keyword). After the dragon is killed, the NPC can absorb the soul under the following conditions:

They targeted the dragon at least once during the battle (targeting does not necessarily mean striking),

They don't leave the fight until the dragon dies (if they leave and re-enter the fight, it's fine, as long as they target the dragon again).

If these are true, they have a 50% chance of gaining a soul.

You may have noticed that I also included a vanilla script - this is because I had to remove the notification that appears in the upper left corner during the Dragonborn DLC main quest when Miraak steals the soul - otherwise it would appear in the dragon soul being absorbed by anyone other than the player.

Install

Install using the manager or manually, then follow a few simple steps explained in this article to set it up with your desired NPCs. You can add as many content as you want and change them during playback without any problems. It only takes a few minutes in SSEEdit. If you don't follow the tutorial, the mod will do absolutely nothing.

If you're wondering why I did this instead of providing a version that includes some NPCs - compatibility issues. In order to apply a script to an NPC, you need to overwrite its record, which will automatically make it incompatible with any overhauls and replacements involving said NPC, and will require a bunch of patches. My "empty" version allows you to add the script to anyone you want without worrying about compatibility.

Configurable parameters

These 3 values can be changed at any time during the game using the console:

Absorb Chance (default: 50%); to change, type SAbsorbChance set to

Maximum distance at which to kill a dragon (default: 10000); to change, set SAbsorbMaxDistance to X, where X is a non-negative number.

Maximum number of tracked dragons (default: 5); to change, set SAbsorbMaxTrackedDragons to X, where X is a number. Given that you can't have a variable-sized array, there are three options: 5 for any number less than 10, 15 for any number less than 20, and 30 for any other number. A tracked dragon is one that was targeted by an NPC before leaving combat. I think 5 is more than enough, even with the mod it's unlikely to fight more than 5 dragons at the same time.

Known issues

If your NPCs have lines of dialogue that can be used when they absorb souls and set them up according to the tutorial, they will not have subtitles. This is because they are not real conversations, just sound files. I have two reasons for using sound files instead of dialogue in my scripts:

The Say() function ended up being buggy - the lines were either not saying, or the subtitles were stuck permanently.

It is easier for end users to set up in SSEEdit this way.

Don't worry if your NPCs don't have sensible lines, they are optional and the mod will work without them.

As for bugs, I fixed the ones I encountered during testing (I took too long to make the code fail safe), but if you notice anything weird please mention it in the comments.

This mod allows NPCs of your choice to be able to absorb dragon souls when a dragon is killed – in the same way as the player can. Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
