After finding the early Northern Diaries mod unsatisfactory, I set out to make my own version. This mod adds many songs from Jeremy Soule's The Northerner Diaries as exploration tracks for Skyrim and Solstheim. We've put some thought into selecting tracks and playlists to ensure your immersion isn't ruined by inappropriate music.
What you'll find:
Only 7 tracks were selected from the album. The remaining 5 didn't make it for a variety of reasons, mainly because I felt they weren't suitable as Skyrim's full-bodied exploration tracks. Take Bifrost, for example, which sounds like the opening track from a '90s Christmas movie.
One of them (Jafnan) was edited to remove the open drum riff because roaring drums are the last thing you want to hear while sneaking through Skyrim's shadowy forests.
Tracks have been categorized into day, night and general. This day's track is slightly more upbeat and will take place in towns, forests, coasts and tundra. The night track is so exciting that it's played everywhere except in towns. General tracks can be played at any time and scattered across different playlists.
These files run at 192kbps, not 48kbps, which is the maximum bitrate allowed for .wxm files.
I used Yakitori Audio Converter to convert the original bandcamp.flac file to .wxm.
In a future update, I can improve the track ordering if I feel that certain tracks are better served in another category. Some of the night tracks may also play during the day, but I'll put that to the test. Also, I might add one of the tracks that doesn't have a cut. Ginnung has some great moments that are perfect for Skyrim, but the track is very long and contains some "flexy" parts that don't work on an exploration track. This is the future.
This mod is not compatible with any other mod that edits vanilla Skyrim music types. This includes my other music mod, Solstheim Soundtracks for Skyrim. Choose one or the other (I prefer Northern Diaries), use patches with negatives, or spend 5 minutes making manual patches in SSEdit.
As always, please let me know any questions, such as number of post sections, frequency, etc.
My other mods:

Mhulchazn - Morrowind Dwemer Home

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
