About this mod Machine translation

There is a large carved wooden arch behind Jarl's Whiterun throne. Available in ultra-high and ultra-low polygon versions and a variety of wood colors.

Sculpted by the legendary Oddleifur, Olaf One-Eyed's personal craftsman, Dragonsreach's Great Portal is for the humblest of even the mightiest warriors who come to claim an audience with the mighty Whiterun Jarl. To this day, it remains one of the wonders of Tamriel and a highlight of a visit to Skyrim.

This mod is an adaptation of my previous Grand Portal of Dragonsreach, and due to popular demand moved the massive carvings of the Urnes Stavkirk gate to the wall behind the Jarl's throne in Dragonsreach, it is finally available for SE.

It is as close as possible to an exact copy of the great doorway of Urnestavkirk (Stave Church) in Norway, carved in November 11 AD; one of the most surviving examples of Nordic wood carving. NOTE: No Christian iconography, so it's friendly.

To make it fit behind the throne I had to adjust the mesh to be symmetrical and make some small modifications to the steps the throne sits on.

There are a variety of wood colors to choose from, and the mesh comes in two versions: high poly (approx. 290,000 triangles) and low poly (approx. 4200 triangles). The high polygon mesh only uses a flat wood texture, so it only responds to incoming light sources. The low-poly mesh uses pre-rendered shadows and highlights, but includes a high-resolution normal map that also responds to incoming lighting conditions.

I've included a few comparison shots below to show the 2 mesh options, as well as a bunch of screenshots to help you choose the right wood color for your lighting setup. All screenshots are taken using vanilla lights and textures only.

The assets in this mod are entirely mine and may be freely used as assets for modders in non-commercial mods. Feel free to add your own screenshots or even your own tweaked textures, as long as you trust this mod. I'm happy to provide my Blender files upon request.

This mod is a revamp of my earlier Great Portal of Dragonsreach that, due to popular demand, moves the monumental carving of the great door of Urnes Stavkirk to the wall behind the Jarl's throne in Dragonsreach, finally available for SE.

It is as close as I could get to an exact copy of the Great Doorway of Urnes Stavkirk (stave church) in Norway, carved c.1130AD; one of the finest surviving examples of Nordic wood carving. NB: There is no Christian iconography, so it is lore friendly.

In order to make it fit behind the throne I had to tweak the mesh to be symmetrical, and make some minor modifications to the dais that the throne sits on.

There are several options available for the wood colour, as well as two versions of the mesh: high-poly (~290,000 triangles) and low-poly (~4200 triangles). The high-poly mesh uses only a flat wood texture so that it responds solely to incident light sources. The low-poly mesh uses pre-rendered shadows and highlights, but includes a high resolution normal map that also responds to incident lighting conditions.

I've included a couple of comparison shots below to show the 2 mesh options, and a whole bunch of screenshots to help you choose the right wood colour for your lighting setup. All screenshots were taken with Vanilla lighting and textures only.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
