This is a patch for xEdit/SSEEdit that creates a new .esp-Patch that removes all spellbooks from your Skyrim game. Patches were created for Spell Research, and there are other ways to learn new spells besides the Spell Tome.

  • Description:

This is a patch for xEdit/SSEEdit that creates a new .esp-Patch that removes all spellbooks from your Skyrim game.

It has been tested with Skyrim SSE v1.5.97, Mod Organizer 2 v2.2.1 and SSEEdit v4.0.3, but will also work with Oldrim or Skyrim VR and other versions.

Hotfix removes Spell Tomes from form lists and leveled lists (i.e. vendor lists, loot lists), containers (i.e. chests), and references (i.e. Spell Tomes placed in cells and Worldspace) by searching for the term "Spell Tome" or "Spell Tome". "SpellTome" in these records.

NOTE: Skip mission recording to avoid breaking missions.

This is a first draft of the patch. If you add this patch to your game and find Spell Tomes (except Quest Spell Tomes) that don't remove properly, please let me know.

This Patcher was created for Spell Research, and there are other ways to learn new spells besides Spell Tomes.

It is recommended that you run Patcher when you have completed your mod list and are about to start a new playthrough. If you add or remove mods, run Patcher again to ensure all current mods are taken into account.

  • Installation:

Download and install the latest version of xEdit/SSEEdit

Copy the two files "No_Spell_Tomes_Patcher.pas" and "Add_Masters_By_Signature_No_Spell_Tomes.pas" to the "Edit Scripts" subfolder in the directory where SSEEdit is installed.

  • Usage:

Run xEdit/SSEEdit and load the entire mod list. Once the background loader is complete, select all loaded mods, then right-click on any mod and select "Apply Script..." from the context menu. Select the script "No_Spell_Tomes_Patch" from the drop-down menu. You will be prompted for the name of the new .esp-Patch file that will be created by this script. Choose a name such as "No_Spell_Tomes_Patch" (without the .esp ending) or a name you like.

Note that Patcher will not change your existing mod, but will create a new .esp file with all the changes. Once the patch is complete, save the new .esp-Patch file and close SSEEdit. Make sure to place the patch relatively low in your load order to ensure that the patch's changes are not overwritten by any other mods.

  • If you have too many mods:

If you have more than 254 active mods and light plugins (.esps with the ESL flag), then when running the above script you will receive an error message in SSEEdit: "Only 0 hosts (of 1) can be added. The hosts list now contains 253 entries and is full."

If this is the case, then you first need to create a new Masters.esp file like this: (see this manual - thanks to Fayhe for this solution).

Run xEdit/SSEEdit and load the entire mod list. Once the background loader is complete, select all loaded mods, then right-click on a mod and select "Apply Script..." from the context menu. This time, select the script "Add_Masters_By_Signature_No_Spell_Tomes" from the drop-down menu. You will be prompted for the name of the new Masters.esp file that will be created by this script. Choose a name such as "No_Spell_Tomes_Masters" (without the .esp ending) or a name you like.

Save the new Masters.esp-Patch file and close SSEEdit. The Masters.esp-Patch file only contains mods that contain relevant records that need to be patched.

Repeat the steps in 3) again, but instead of loading the entire list of mods, only the newly created Masters.esp file you want to load (SSEEdit will automatically load all other mods that contain records that need to be patched). If step 3) is completed successfully and "No_Spell_Tomes_Patch" is created, you can delete the Masters.esp-Patch file as it is no longer needed. If you're still over the 254 mod limit, you'll need to split your mod list into chunks and run Patcher for each chunk.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
