motivation
This is something I'd like to do...well...Anyway, I really like Take Notes - Dragonborn SSE Journal and use it regularly. Of course, I dreamed of images, hyperlinks, insertion locations, embedded videos and stuff. Well, most of it is still impossible, but due to the nature of the "wheel" this model rolls on, the movement is the direction I imagine it to be.
The recently uploaded ImGui framework is a great opportunity to make a project out of it. Researching some pros and cons, adding improvements, having a mod that's like a proof of concept and usable for non-mods would also be welcome. I spent enough time working on this model and considering the short life of humans, at some point a line had to be drawn and uploaded here.
summary
By pressing the "Insert" key, you will toggle the overlay and make it part of the journal book shown in the screenshot. The game will stop processing your keyboard and mouse, which will give you the opportunity to click, type, etc. Press the "Insert" key and the diary will be hidden again and the game will continue to use your input controller. The problem I haven't solved yet is deciding how to hide/show the journal in "Overlay" mode ^^'
The journal consists of two pages, each with a different title and text content. The content can be any practical number of rows and columns. Your English collection is limited due to the use of handwriting fonts from Skyrim (if you know of a rich Unicode handwriting font - please let me know). Some features:
Save as JSON (log format) and text files
Loading from JSON and Take Notes (xml) files
There is a chapter overview to insert/remove chapters (aka pages)
Basic text editing navigation: selection, text movement, etc.
You can copy/paste Windows clipboard
Adjustable font size and color
Book size adjustable
Remark
Journals have nothing to do with your load/save/run/stop game state!
This means that if you type something and another save or character loads, the content will remain unchanged. You must save and load manually. I generally don't think this is troublesome, as there's never been a situation where I've wanted my text to disappear since loading the game from earlier. Instead, after writing it so many times, the scene turned sour and my words disappeared. Next time I don't have the input or it's not as good.
Another thing this means is that if you start writing, one day may pass and the next one may come! Even worse, a stray dog might escape because your shoes were abandoned! If you want the game to pause, invoke the console or game menu. It's a click, but until I figure out how to "enter" the game I can't stop you.
The page is not wrapping your text!
Now this is cumbersome, but I can't find any sane way to support this in ImGui's multi-line input fields. This means you have to manually press enter or new line. This is more or less OK, but if you adjust the font size, or decide to resize the journal itself, you may see gaps or cut text. So as a suggestion, resize your books and fonts and leave them as is (i.e. mimic the fixed size from Take Notes).
Regarding Take Notes, loading (importing) xml files:
In my books, I don't use any new lines, so when I load some of these books in Journal, I get a page full of lines. This led me to implement a greedy word wrapping algorithm, accessible from the Settings menu. Set the line width and press "Wrap" to split all page content into new lines. I believe existing information such as lines and formatting may be lost, but it's still much better than manual adjustments. Note that changes are irreversible, so loading and wrapping may need to be attempted.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
