special edition

This mod contains meshes that fix many issues with moss on Whiterun walls. The mod's original description states that these meshes are fixed: "The moss is positioned so it doesn't glitch or disappear," and "the moss's transparency is blended so it doesn't look 'cut off' in places."

Who made these grids?

  • Created by Bethesda (<2011)
  • Unknown modifications made by the USKP team (<2015)
  • SparrowPrince implemented an unknown fix on guard tower grid (<2015)
  • Moss positioning and transparency fixed by arronus (2015)

Then, at some point, like Whiterun's moss in the vanilla game, the model simply disappears into thin air. Well, I think this fix should live on. I think the Skyrim modding community should stop looking at Whiterun's walls with disgust, and instead with pride - for those who have worked hard to fix these meshes, and for those who think they just installed a bad texture or something.

Ok...how do I install them?

Download it using your favorite mod manager and install it normally. There are no plugins or bsa to worry about, just a few loose mesh files. This mod should be compatible with everything, but it's possible that another mod may at some point edit the same mesh in the future, in which case some files will be overwritten one way or another. I found a very serious zero conflict in the load order. For those curious, a list of mods that I can confirm will not change these grids can be found in the spoilers section below:

Credits and Permissions

This mod is made by arronus. I just uploaded the grid after running it through SSE Nif Optimizer

SSE Nif Optimizer is made by ousnius, thanks for this amazing tool!

From the original mod page: "Credit: SparrowPrince provided a fixed guard tower grid, allowing me to use a gif for this object."

For the same reason I can upload these meshes here without making them, these fixed Bethesda meshes should be considered a resource for modders and used/included in any mod you want to make. Spread them out. For the love of Talos, let's not have any more bryozoans, okay?

for Special Edition

This mod contains a handful of meshes that fix a number of issues with the moss on the walls of Whiterun. The original description of the mod states that these meshes fix: "the moss positioning so it does not glitch out or disappear," and "the transparency blending of the moss so it does not look 'cut off' in some places."

And then, at some point, just like Whiterun's moss in the vanilla game, this mod simply vanished into thin air. Well, I think this fix should live on. I think the Skyrim modding community should look upon the walls of Whiterun no longer with disgust, but with pride--for the individuals who put in the hard work to fix these meshes, and for all those noobs out there who thought they just installed a bad texture pack or something.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
