The Gelatinous Cube is an artificially created translucent sea-green ooze, an irrational gelatinous substance deliberately shaped into a cube shape by the magic arts. The strange creature is usually of considerable size, and the water it is composed of is constantly moving downwards within its geometry. What's left ends up creating a constant pool of slime beneath it, formed from an acidic liquid substance that evaporates on contact with the outside world, turning into a rising cloud of gas that is then absorbed again by the cube, creating a cycle. Another notable feature is the many objects floating inside a plump gelatinous cube.

The gelatinous cube is an irrational predator that stalks dungeons and shadowy caves in regular, predictable patterns. As they move through the corridors of these dungeons, they absorb any matter (dead or alive) in their path. Organic material quickly dissolves in the acidic mud that forms the cube's body, while bones and inorganic matter (such as armor fragments) spend some time floating inside the creature until expelled or digested more slowly. As they slid down the corridor, they left a clean path free of debris and bodies except for their own muddy path.
