Immersing yourself now provides a long-lasting meal (not related to alchemical effects). A complete adventurer is a happy adventurer.
All food effects last for 8 in-game hours, or 24 real-world minutes.
(To save readability, times are not shown in the food's description.)
A quick modification tool I built for /u/256kmodel to make food feel more immersive.
You can't just eat 100 wheels of cheese anymore. The restorative property effect on food has been replaced by an empowering property effect, which stacks with potions and enchanted equipment, but does not stack.
For example. If you eat chicken dumplings at +20 health and stamina for +80% health regeneration, and then eat cooked beef at +25 health, then for the next 8 hours you'll have the highest value: +25 health, +20 stamina, and +80% health regeneration.
Additionally, Fortify Health potions stack these effects, rather than simply replacing them in vanilla.
In short: food effects and alchemical effects are separate.
To get the food benefits, you're going to need to cook something, as most raw foods no longer have any effect after consumption.
Food mostly follows the rules below, with a few exceptions in addition to retaining effects similar to the vanilla game.
Health is affected by meat, bread and cheese.
Stamina is affected by vegetables.
Magicka is affected by fruits or sugary foods.

(somewhat confusing, originally just for planning purposes)
Compatibility
Mealtime only changes food items and food-related magical effects.
Load this mod after any mod that changes food.
-USSEP changes integrated into v1.0.1
-Realistic needs and illnesses are compatible via alternate files.
Food added by other mods will use the vanilla system. In the future I may end up making compatibility patches for certain mods, like Beyond Skyrim: Bruma or Dawn of the Sky.

A quick mod I made for /u/256kmodel that makes food more immersive.
No longer can you eat 100 wheels of cheese in a pinch. Restore Stat effects on food items have been replaced by Fortify Stat effects that stack with potions and enchanted gear, but not themselves.
E.g. If you eat a Chicken Dumpling for +20 to Health and Stamina with +80% Health Regeneration, then eat Cooked Beef for +25 Health, you will keep the highest values for the next 8 hours in-game: +25 Health, +20 Stamina, and +80% Health Regeneration.
Furthermore, a Fortify Health potion will stack with these effects, whereas it would not have simply replaced them in Vanilla.
In short: Food effects and Alchemy affects are separated.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
