about

This relatively simple mod adds a cartography shop to Skyrim in the Whiterun suburb owned by the Dravarol family. Here you can purchase maps of different skylines. When loaded, these maps will show all locations for that location on the map, although they cannot be reached quickly. All maps are worth 500 gold except Solsheim map (400), Military Camp map (200) and Dawnguard, Revised map (250).

For DLC integration, there are two additional mappers. One of these is found in Helga's double-story house in Riften; he sells a map that reveals new locations added by Dawnguard. The other is found in The Retching Netch in Solstheim, and her map shows the location of Solstheim. These vendors were originally included in a separate ESP, but since SE includes all the DLC, I have no reason not to merge the whole thing together and fix it.

This was a very neat mod on LE and I wanted to see it implemented in Skyrim SE, so I've done that and cleaned up some kinks. I'll correct more issues as they arise, and possibly expand the mod's functionality as I see fit. I'm always open to new suggestions, so please provide feedback!

How does it work?

After purchasing maps from various vendors, you must read them to display locations on the map. This is done via scripts and attached script properties, but only runs when features are opened (they are considered books) and does not cause problems in game. You should have no performance hit, polling or other nonsense.

Fun fact: This is actually a mechanic in Vanilla. If you read the book "The Explorer's Guide to Skyrim", there are four standing monuments marked on the map. Based on this, I assume Christobis used this script as a basis when originally creating this mod.

Mod integration and patching

This mod is compatible with all mods except mods editing the same exact external location in Whiterun Hold. This mod only adds an exotic house with a carriage stand, but see the image tag for more information. Below is a list of compatible, incompatible or partially compatible mods. Please note that some patches are optional and not all mods below are compatible with each other!

Elysium Estate - Partially Compatible - Patches provided - Ensure lateral and meshing compatibility.

Dark's Whiterun Marketplace - Partially Compatible - Patches available - Ensure landscape and gridding compatibility.

Legacy of the Dragonborn - Compatible, Optional Patch - Added new museum shipping crate applicable keywords.

Help making maps - optional patch for compatibility - adds maps to vendors.

Help Owned Compass - Compatible optional patch - Adds maps and compasses to vendors.

Capital Whiterun extension - compatible - no patch required!

Mill Inn - compatible - no patch required!

future plans

Although the original scope of this mod is essentially full functionality, I hope to expand it in the future. If you have any suggestions on how to accomplish this please let me know. At least I'd like to add custom dialogue for the NPCs, and maybe even some quests that allow you to earn maps instead of just buying them.

I'll also be adding patches as needed, with the one for Atlas Map Markers almost finished!

Install

This mod is zipped, tagged ESL, and packaged into BSA. Your mod administrator must support ESPLite files for installation to work smoothly. I can only provide support for Mod Organizer 2 users as this is the Mod Manager I use personally. The vortex should be fine. Just follow the FOMOD installation instructions and you're good to go.

Uninstall

I don't recommend uninstalling any mod mid-game unless …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
