Magicka cost level scaling
This mod adjusts magicka cost scaling so that spells of a specific school are 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% or 90% cheaper at 100 skills than at 0 skills. In vanilla Skyrim, spell costs per school of magic are 41% cheaper at 100 skills than at 0 skills. If desired, increasing scaling allows you to use higher level spells without magic equipment.

describe
In vanilla Skyrim, it's nearly impossible to be an effective magic user without using magic gear to reduce your casting costs to zero or next to nothing. Without perks, a single Firestorm costs 847 mana to cast a 100 point destruction skill (which costs a whopping 1426 mana at 0 skill!). Even though each magic cost reduction only cuts your magic cost in half, that's not enough to allow a dragon to effectively cast expensive spells.
This mod increases the magic cost level already present in vanilla Skyrim, allowing dragons to cast spells efficiently without requiring 100% reduction in the cost of magic equipment. Options available at level 100 cost 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% or 90% less, while vanilla Skyrim's level 100 costs 41% less. This will still be combined with other magicka cost reductions, such as the magical tree perk and magic equipment.
I recommend using the 80% or 90% option to get a sense of balance. This reduces casting costs by 66% or 83% respectively compared to vanilla Skyrim 100 skills.
How vanilla magicka scale works:
From UESP:
"Spell costs follow the following formula:
Cost = base cost × skill multiplier × additional multiplier × equipment multiplier × double projection multiplier
Skill Multiplier = 1 - (Skill/400)^0.65
When the skill is 100, the skill multiplier is equal to ~0.5939. "
In other words, in vanilla Skyrim, mana cost was reduced from 100% of 100 skills to 59% of 100 skills (41% cheaper). This effect seems to be quite large, but in practice it is very subtle since high level spells have extremely high base casting costs (e.g. Fire Storm has a base cost of 1426).
What this mod changes:
This mod adjusts skill multipliers so that magicka costs shrink even further. Options available at level 100 cost 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% or 90% less.
Why this mod is balanced:
Magic in vanilla Skyrim is almost unusable, and there's no crazy magic gear. This model is just about being a viable mage without the need for cost-cutting gear. Considering that in vanilla Skyrim you can already reduce the casting cost to 0 via enchantments, I think this mode is unbalanced compared to vanilla by reducing the cost by a whopping 83% (10% of the base cost compared to the "90%" option compared to the 59% of the vanilla base cost for 100 skills.

Description
In vanilla Skyrim, it is practically impossible to be an effective magic user without using enchanted gear to reduce your casting costs to nothing, or near-nothing. With no perks, a single Fire Storm costs 847 magicka to cast at 100 Destruction skill (It costs a whopping 1426 magicka at 0 skill!). Even getting every single magicka cost reducing perk only reduces your magicka costs by half, which is not enough to enable the dragonborn to cast expensive spells effectively.
This mod increases the magicka cost level scaling already present in vanilla Skyrim so that the dragonborn can cast spells effectively without needing 100% cost reducing enchanted gear. The options available are 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, or 90% cost reduction at level 100, compared to 41% cost reduction at level 100 in v …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
