Lucky Day Semi-Random Voice Check

by Epic Crab·v1.0·Updated 2019-03-05

There is a magic number for voice checks. If you have more skills than this, you will always pass. If you have less, you never will. That's unrealistic. Sometimes it definitely goes south, and sometimes you get away with things you should never do, just because you're lucky.

About this mod Machine translation

There is a magic number for voice checks. If you have more skills than this, you will always pass. If you have less, you never will. That's unrealistic. Sometimes it goes south for sure, and sometimes you get away with things you should never do, just because you're lucky.

When doing a speech check in Skyrim, it is compared to the global value that stores the minimum speech. In the vanilla game, these values are immutable, only a perk can change them.

This mod will reset the skill check threshold every time a persuasion check is passed or every 24 hours. The values are normally distributed, so they are usually very close to the vanilla values plus or minus a few points. However, on particularly lucky days, voice checking will be easier than otherwise. And vice versa; sometimes, on bad days, you have to have higher presentation skills to pass the same check.

This mod aims to complement Andreaphus's How Hard Is Persuasion check? I suggest that if you use this mod, you can also use that one. It's good to know the difficulty of the skill check, but I don't want to know the exact value that will work every time. This makes it less interesting.

The default range of possible skill checks is centered around the vanilla value, but has a larger standard deviation to provide variability. Volumes are capped between 0 and 100. However, if you don't like my setup (which is fair, no judgment), all of this is configurable in MCM.

Andreaphus already has such a mod (Tweak 10). Unlike this mod, the rerolls of skill checks in this mod are evenly distributed. This means you're more likely to have a particularly low or high skill check with his version. If you don't like my implementation, or you're curious what the difference is, I suggest you check it out.

When you make a speech check in Skyrim, it compares it to a global value that stores the minimum speech. In the vanilla game, these values are constant and one perk is the only thing to change them.

This mod will reroll the skill check threshold every time you pass a persuade check or every 24 hours. The values are normally distributed, so they'll usually be pretty close to the vanilla value plus or minus a few points. But, on particularly lucky days, the speech check will be quite a bit easier than it would otherwise. The reverse is also true; sometimes, on bad days, you'll have to have a higher Speech skill to pass the same check.

This mod is intended to complement Andrealphus' How Hard Is This Persuasion Check? and I recommend that if you use this mod, you also use that one. It's good to have a sense of how hard a skill check is, but I don't want to know the exact value that will work every time. That makes it much less interesting.

The default ranges of possible skill checks are centered on the vanilla values, but with a large standard deviation to provide variability. The rolls are capped between 0 and 100. However, all of this is configurable in the MCM if you don't like my settings (which is fair, no judgment).

Andrealphus already has a mod (Tweak 10) like this. Unlike this mod, the rerolls on the skill checks in that mod are evenly distributed. This means you're more likely to roll especially low or especially high for skill checks with his version. I recommend checking his out if you don't like my implementation, or if you're curious what the difference is.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
