- -warn - -
Before you dive into this mod for the first time, I'll give you a fair warning: this is my first Skyrim mod, only the second mod I've created, and is not some form of compatibility or merge patch, or an Oldrim port.
- -describe - -
With that caveat, this mod replaces the "Roughspun Tunic" and "Footwraps" you get at the vanilla start of the game when you start as The Prisoner, with a set of gray "Fine Clothes" and a pair of tan buttons - "Merchant Boots".
It's primarily a test model for learning how to edit your clothes as a prisoner when you find yourself in an Imperial prisoner van. As someone who seems to be constantly creating characters to test out mods, I'm frustrated by the fact that my character never reaches Skyrim with anything but torn sackcloth. After some searching, I found that none of the mods available suited my preferences. So, thanks to some tips from Better Starting Clothes' discussion tag, I managed to create this particular mod.
- -How to install - -
MO2:
Click "Download with Manager" and install and activate as usual.
vortex:
Click "Download with Manager" and install as usual, overwriting when prompted? Not sure as I don't use Vortex.
NMM:
Click "Download with Manager" and install as usual, overwriting when prompted? Not sure as I don't use NMM.
manual:
Manually download, unzip, place the ESP file into the "Data" folder of the Skyrim Special Edition installation location, and... activate in-game? Not sure as I have little experience installing mods manually...
---Load order---
I honestly can't offer any real advice on how to place this in your load order. Each Skyrim loadout order is unique and highly tailored, and honestly only you, the player, know where to best fit your mods to get the effect you want. If you have any doubts, let LOOT - Load Order Optimizer Tool do its job (that's what I do).
- -compatibility - -
This mod should be compatible with anything that doesn't replace the starting cloth you get at the beginning of the game (Rough Coat and Footmuffs).
This mod is fully compatible with Khajiits and Argonians. (Unless of course you have a mod, otherwise...)
Since this mod only modifies the prisoner costume you get at the start of the game, and only contains vanilla assets, it will persist any reshape and/or retexture mods you have installed.
This mod is not compatible with Better Starting Clothes as they do similar things.
This mod is not compatible with Cyrodiil's Better Starting Clothes - Fugivite as they do similar things.
Not compatible with NMM? This is an ESP file tagged ESL and I'm not very familiar with NMM as to whether it supports Light Masters Files.
--- ---question
This mod has not been tested with alternate startup modules. Since I don't use alternate launch modes myself, I can't attest to how this mod interacts with them.
This may conflict with other mods that transform the sequences introduced by Helgen, e.g.
- -Notes - -
As mentioned, this is my first ever mod, just a test.
This mod was created in SSE Creation Kit with SSE CreationKit Fixes.
This mod is an ESP which is tagged ESL using xEdit.
I plan to expand the clothing (and possibly armor) selection in the future, once I'm more comfortable with the Creation Kit and my own skillset is like a game changer.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
