I've always found the rewards for killing mammoths to be pretty substantial, considering how tough they are early in the game - killing giants is a pretty lucrative venture by comparison.
What annoys me is that the mammoth's trunk isn't particularly useful unless the player is using a survival mode that requires them to eat, nor are the mammoth tusks useful other than for some minor tasks. I realize that mammoths are useful for filling large soul gems, but it still feels like a relief, especially for me since I often play characters who don't use enchantments.
There is no doubt that one can tan bear hides, tanned cat hides, etc. into leather, and the skins of Skyrim's largest beasts are not looted. Can't be wasted?
I know there may be "overhaul" mods that fix this problem, but I want a lightweight solution to this specific problem that doesn't come with any strings attached. So I created a small mod to address this complaint of mine, which I've had for a while. I thought I'd share.
Mammoths now drop Mammoth Hide, which can be turned into 8x leather at any tanning rack, making Mammoths the primary source of leather.
Mammoths now drop 2 instead of 1, and each can be turned into 4x Mammoth Powder at Tanning Racks.
Mammoths also drop a new alchemical ingredient eye drop.
If you want to use Arndas' Grindable Mammoth Tusks, or want to improve other features of Mammoth Loot, but find that grinding the Mammoth Tusks to crumbs, an optional file is provided that does not contain the Powder of Mammoth Tusk recipe. Said to be capable).
Do not install both files at the same time, choose the "main" or "optional" version.
The recipe components of this mod are compatible with any other mod. However, mods that edit the Mammoth's level list are incompatible, as they will prevent you from legally obtaining the Mammoth Skin.
If you don't know what the above means:
If you find that Mammoth isn't dropping Hide/Eyes with my mod installed, it's possible that another mod is editing its level list and my mod needs to be moved further down your load order for it to work properly.
Like most other mods, download and activate this mod at NMM/Mod Organizer/Mod Manager of your choice.
If there are any issues that are not advertised, and/or you encounter any problems, please let me know and I will try to resolve them as quickly as possible.
Other than bugfixes, I have no further updates planned for this mod. However, I'm considering releasing a new mod that will replace the improved mammoth loot - so far it improves the loot for mammoths, hawks, goats, wolves, scions, and frostbitten spiders in a very similar way to that mod. In progress, no ETA.
xEdit used by ElminsterAU and the SSEEdit team was used to create this mod.
Arndas' grindable Mammoth Tusk, which I wanted to build upon and lead me to making this mod.

For posterity's sake, since I play SE exclusively now, I have no intention of porting my mods to Oldrim, but if anyone wants to, please ask my permission. This doesn't work with my Meltdown mods because they require a Master file that I don't own.

I've always felt that killing Mammoths had a very underwhelming payoff, considering how tough they are in the early levels of the game - especially when slaying Giants is a fairly profitable venture, in comparison.
It irked me that unless the player uses a survival mod that requires them to eat, Mammoths' Snouts are not particularly useful, and other than being used in a few secondary quests, Mammoth …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
