describe

One of the main problems I have with Magic in Skyrim is learning new spells. Learning the spell tome takes time and effort, but instead the player character seems to just magically (pun intended) absorb the spell, only to brutally rip the tome apart.

Immersive Spell Learning makes learning spell books take time. It's lightweight, clean, and fully compatible with mods that add spells. It works right out of the box and is fully adjustable. No more reading spell books, you can fully understand them in no time!

But there are already mods that fix things like better spell learning or spell learning and discovery!

Well, it's true. This mod does exactly the same thing as Better Spelling Learning. However, "Better Spell Learning" exhibits erratic behavior, has no active support, and is incompatible with the spell mod itself (sorry, ropya :D).

Spell Learn and Discover specifically fixes the latter, but lacks a core feature of Better Spell Learn - learning bibliographies. Instead, it keeps track of the spell you're trying to learn and builds knowledge of it while you sleep.

Also, I tried to keep it simple. Things like your current location or race will not affect your ability to learn new spells, as this will also affect compatibility (e.g. custom player homes). This mod does make it so that learning new spells via spells takes time. There is nothing else.

So, how does this mod work?

Whenever you pick up a tome and you don't currently have that spell, the tome is converted to a "Spell Note". Spell notes can be found in the "Miscellaneous" section of the inventory, and can be activated to study the spell itself. The time it takes to learn a spell depends on the level of the spell and your skill level in that spell school. A master of destruction can learn the art of destruction from an apprentice in an hour or two, while the apprenticeship takes several months.

Before you ask - the spelling instructions themselves are required. Any spell module requires a compatibility patch without replacing the actual directory at runtime.

Will it play animation?

certainly! During the study period, your character will helplessly browse a book or try to find a blank piece of paper. Learning at Skyrim has never been more real!

Is this compatible with...

The answer is "yes".

Can you add...

Probably not. I think the mod is functionally complete. If you have ideas on how to make the mod more convenient or immersive, please feel free to let me know!

SKSE requirements and MCM support

Immersive Spelling Learning requires SKSE. Without it, out-of-the-box compatibility would be impossible (and I'd probably be frustrated). The good news is that everyone using SKSE also uses SkyUI - this is also a requirement. Within the mod's MCM support you can make almost any adjustment:

Total time spent studying spell books (I've included a chart to visualize the default settings, but you can feel free to use modifiers as well)

Whether to destroy the spell book when creating a note note (enabled by default as keeping spells is a bit of a cheat)

Should the game force third person during animations (players with modified First Person View should try setting this to false)... and more!

Install

Make sure SKSE and SkyUI are installed. Other than that, it's plug and play. I highly recommend using a mod manager like Vortex.

Uninstall

Theoretically, this mod can be safely uninstalled after using the "Stop Immersive Spell Learning" button in the MCM and getting rid of all spelling instructions. However, I'm relatively new to Skyrim modding and don't know the quirks of the creation engine. Typically, people will advise against uninstalling mods mid-game, so I'm not really a fan of uninstalling immersive spell le …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
