illiteracy

Maybe it wouldn't make sense to play a character who's illiterate, but it would make even less sense for books to give a character a skill boost or play a significant role in mission completion, so this attempts to address that.

About this mod Machine translation

Maybe it wouldn't make sense to play a character who's illiterate, but it would make even less sense for books to give a character a skill boost or play a significant role in mission completion, so this attempts to address that.

This mod removes things caused by reading books. This includes quests starting with books, skill upgrades from skill books, spelling most learned spells, and some scrolls.

Inspired by influencers who wanted to play illiterate bloggers:

Skill Books: UESP lists the skill books in Skyrim. These have simply been edited to remove the skill boosts they conveyed in vanilla Skyrim. The Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition patch contains edits to many skill book texts, this mod includes these edits but does not require USSEP to be installed. You can still read the books, and I highly recommend checking out 2920: The Last Year of the First Era, which is a twelve-part series. Most of them are vanilla Skyrim trickbooks, but they also make for a good story.

Quest Trigger Books: Removed scripts that launch the following tasks when the related book is first opened:

Boethiah's Call

Find Red Eagle's Sword

forbidden legend

lost age

It seems like everything can be started without reading a book, but I haven't tested it myself.

Known Issues: Even if you haven't gotten a Crimson Nirnroot yet, you can still start the quest A Return To Your Roots by reading Sinderion's Notebook, and since it works differently than the other quests, I don't know how to stop it, but there is a Crimson Nirnroot in the same room of the book.

Spell Book: Spells are no longer taught, but they will still appear in loot and vendors, so you can still sell them.

Note: This removes any ability to learn spells from Spell Tomes.

Without adding another way to learn spells, this means there aren't any new spells.

Rolling: Removed from loot list and vendor list. They can still be found in the world, and currently they still work as expected. In the future, I can edit them to do nothing, like Spell Tomes.

At this time, no steps have been taken to affect the notes and letters that may have begun the mission.

Currently not compatible with other mods that edit books or scroll level lists, it will not affect spell outlines added by the mod.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
