Changed Vanilla Ice shader to reduce flickering. In VR, the flickering effect is headache-inducing.

Ice Shimmer Fix changes the Vanilla Ice shader to reduce shimmer.

In my opinion this is a must have for VR as the 3D effects look terrible and cause headaches.

In SSE, the effect is less noticeable, but this mod will still work there.

How does it work?

It works by changing the Vanilla Ice shader to a single pass shader. It took me some time to figure out what was causing all the flashing, but after a few days of trial and error I discovered that all shaders that weren't single pass were flashing a ridiculous amount. The worst offender is the ice shader, as it is used for over 700 objects in the vanilla game. The improvements shown in the screenshots I took may seem small, but in VR the difference is day and night. I may fix other shaders in the future if asked, but others are nowhere near this bad.

Version

Default - closest to vanilla.

Blue Ice - Looks more icy but may occasionally have odd transitions.

Remove Ice - completely disables the ice shader but causes weird transitions.

Mod Compatibility

This mod should be compatible with all mods that don't change the ice shader material object, I don't know what the use is. If you find an incompatibility, please report it as a bug on the error page.

Mod suggestions

To make snow and ice look good in VR, I recommend using No Snow Under Roof, Real Mountain and Nordic Snow alongside this mod. I don't recommend using Better Dynamic Snow or Majestic Mountains as they can cause some spots to flash poorly. You can also change the appearance of the snow with a few adjustments. I don't have recommended settings for them yet, but you can try them, they are: bEnableImprovedSnow = 0 (reverts to oldrim snow tint), bToggleSparkles = 0 (disables the pure white spots you see on snow), bDeactivateAOOnSnow = 0 (enables ambient occlusion on snow), fSnowRimLightIntensity = 0.1 (set to anything below the default of 3 to reduce the intensity of light delayed by snow).

FAQ

Q: How much flicker does this reduce?

A: Under ideal conditions it will eliminate it completely, but it depends on the lighting in the area and post-processing etc. The mountain model also affects the appearance.

Q: How does this affect performance?

A: If anything, it will slightly improve performance.

Q: Does the Remove Ice option remove the ice shader?

A: No, it just unlinks the shader mesh from the shader for 100% compatibility.

If you like this mod, please endorse it! Thank you =)

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
