describe
Housecarl Companions Refine is a standalone, low-fantasy and faithful NPC appearance pack for Housecarl followers assigned to Dragonborn upon ownership. The overall design is still "Vanilla+" but pays homage to the character designs you might be more familiar with from Dragon Age or The Witcher. Instead of overhauling NPC levels and primary designs, players will be rewarded with unique, balanced buffs for bringing them into your party. This is an ongoing project that will hopefully cover every NPC in Skyrim by the end of the year. In the meantime, consider checking out Windsong's immersive character overhaul, his overall visual design helped inspire the direction of this mod as well as the direction of Skyrim modding.
The unofficial Skyrim Special Edition patch (AI packages and other bug fixes) and some changes to the cutting room floor (unused base game inventory items) have been forwarded for your convenience. However, in most cases, any mod used to edit Actor records will require a compatibility patch.

Knowledge
Some changes were made to better reflect the characters' lore and backstories. Some of the heavy armor found in the base game has been interspersed on certain characters, such as Bastion Argis and Dwemer Shield equipped with Dwemer armor or Jordis being given more elegant steel plate armor. A tribute to some of my favorite character designs in the game and the Skyrim community, like QAxe's Housecarl Makover. Some characters may look more tired, such as Housecarl Gregor of Dawnstar, who is known for his nightmares and harsh environments. Jordis' appearance is slightly younger, but identical to her vanilla counterpart. Housecarl is similar to a civil servant in Skyrim, and not all of them need to wear Steel Armor. When you meet Iona, she is wearing regular farm clothes instead.
As a demo, each follower will provide unique rewards to players who travel with them. Housecarl may provide them with unique insights during his travels. This could be a product of the city they live in, or it could be a major plot point for the character moving forward. With the exception of Lydia (a very early game follower), all family karls are designed to provide players with unique rewards that incentivize players to take companions on different journeys. The design is not intended to interfere with the balance of gameplay or functionality in other mods, and is primarily intended to inspire role play. This feature will be further developed and expanded.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
