introduce.
I recently played Horizon Zero Dawn on the Playstation service and was so impressed with their fast travel that I sought out ways to implement this in Skyrim. Both TES4 and TES5 have a fair system for fast travel: if you discover a location, you can travel from anywhere outdoors.
However, the recent trend is to add more and more "survival" elements to games of this type, including Skyrim itself, and many mods are adding their own 2 cents in including a greater variety of random encounters, different penalties for hunger, thirst, colds, etc., so using a fast travel system like this would seem to ruin those aspects of the gameplay...
So the "kill the fly with a sledgehammer" solution is to disable fast travel altogether. But sometimes you just don’t want to be traveling from Rorikstead to Solitude for the 8,000th time, damn it… but you don’t want to feel like you’re cheating too!
That's what I find about this system to be pretty fair. You can still fast travel, but at a cost: you have to be prepared! You have to prepare food, warm and light, to get to your destination, this will prevent you from being lazy and "cheating" whenever you feel like it.
Of course there are always console commands...but, mods can only do so much, right?
detail
To be more precise, this mod disables all map-based fast travel in the game. Bays, ferries, etc. still work, and as far as I know other mods that add their own options for this style are still available. However, opening the map from anywhere in Tamriel will not allow fast travel, which is the classic "fast travel is not currently available at this location".
In order to travel quickly, you must now craft a travel bag! To do this, head to any cooking station and prepare a travel bag! You can find it under the "Other" category.
By default, recipes require the following:
1 torch
1 wolf skin
1 firewood
1 loaf
1 red apple
1 grilled chicken breast
1 cooked beef
By default, this will create a "Travel Bag" in the "Other" category of your inventory, with a weight of 20 pounds. When you click on the item (from an outdoor location, such as vanilla) it will open the map and enable fast travel again. Upon arrival, the travel bag will be consumed and removed from your inventory. (Please note that if you change your mind and close the map, the Travel Set will not be spent).
and voila! You can now travel in survival mode, or if you're in a vanilla Skyrim game, you won't want to fly all over the map like a Game of Thrones character from Season 7.
Optional files
Since everyone's taste and requirements are subjective, I have included several optional add-ons that modify different aspects of the travel bag and its creation. All of these plugins are marked with the .esl flag, which means they don't take up valuable plugin resources (255 .esp limit). Long live!
HZD Fast Travel - Gourmet Recipes Only
Replace the original recipe with one that only calls for food. The new recipe is as follows:
2 red apples
2 carrots
2 potatoes
2 loaves
1 cooked beef
1 grilled chicken breast
HZD fast travel-more recipes.esp
Adds many different new additional recipes to the cooking station, allowing for greater variety and mixing/matching of the various items required. All in all, there are a total of 41 (forty-one) additional recipes.
Without listing them all, some examples include substituting a bear pelt for a wolf pelt, substituting one food item for another, and so on. However, all recipes still require the use of torches and firewood.
The add-on's obvious advantages are immersion and versatility ("Damn! I don't have an Apple! I don't think I'll ever walk again..."), but the price is crowded. The way the crafting system works is that a single item can have multiple recipe entries, but a new "constructible object" (i.e. recipe) must be made for each variant …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
