Convert wall containers inside all three Hellfire Vaults to open crates.

Hello.

I made this mod for Skyrim VR for myself and thought others might find it useful. I think this should also work with Skyrim Special Edition, but I don't own it and can't test it. If you are willing to test it in SSE, please let me know how it turns out.

Ever looked at the open crates that come with smelters and wished you had more?

I did it.

This mod replaces certain locks, barrels and chests with open crates located in the blacksmith room in the cellar. No more trying to remember which ore, ingot or gem is in which airtight container. Now you can easily walk over to see the blacksmith materials you need and pick them up.

First wall: 10 (5 + 5) open crates of each type of ore or ingot.

Wall 2: 10 (5 + 5) open crates of each type of ingot or ore.

Wall 3: 12 (6 + 6) open crates of each gemstone (regular and flawless).

Floor: 2 crates for leather and leather strips.

The scripts for the workbench have not changed. This means you must build a safe, barrel or chest and use appropriate materials. The workbench options and their changes are listed below. The left and right sides are defined by standing in the doorway and facing the blacksmith's room.

Safety (5) [first listed] = right side, bottom shelf

Bucket[column 4] = right side, middle layer

Safety (5) [2nd listed] = left, middle shelf

end table [1st small list] = middle, middle + bottom shelf

After building the smelter, there will be open crates on the left side, on the bottom shelf.

Note that I did not make chests for the soluble dwemer relics and pelts, as you only need one of those to produce dwarf ingots and leather respectively. There is no practical reason to store them. If you want to store them in a public place for roleplaying reasons, you still can. I didn't touch the built-in top shelf on the wall where the fur originally came from (see photo). Additionally, there is an open crate next to the smelter that you can use for dwemer artifacts.

Skyrim house decoration is a pain in the ass. Once you leave the house and return, the object will inevitably jump out of its place. Now, use this well-known workaround:

Enter the cellar and place all the forging materials on the floor. I recommend discarding items individually rather than stacking them as this makes post-production less cumbersome. Exit the house and go back inside to enter the wine cellar again. Lift the blacksmith shop materials and place them into the crates. They will now stay put. Do not put them back into inventory or you will have to restart the process.

Additionally, I find it easier to swing a sword or hold an arrow and point it at objects and move them. I don't know if the sight of a pointing device makes a psychological difference, or if the game mechanics change. Anyway, I've placed a wooden sword on the far wall that appears after building the smelter. It replaces the broom in the photo above. If you have trouble picking up and dropping items with VR hands, try using this. If it's not for you, a wooden sword can be given as a gift to an adopted child.

Use Vortex or Mod Organizer 2. Both support Skyrim VR.

Click on the File tab and click on the latest version to get the mod. Don't forget to install and enable the mod in the mod software.

The mod will work if you have already built safes, barrels and terminal tables. However, after crafting the end platform, a shovel and pickaxe will spawn on the far ledge. You may want to use another mod that prevents Hearthfire objects from respawning, as it may interfere with objects you place in chests. I believe the respawn time for objects in Skyrim is 10 days.

Using the mod before building the safe, the barrel and end table did not cause the problem I had removed the shovel and pickaxe.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
