I've always found Laid to Rest to be one of the most prominent quests in Skyrim. As a fan of detective stories, I wanted to try and flesh it out by adding more investigative beats to the sequence, making Hroggar and Thonnir more involved in the mission and the player more involved in their story. I also wanted to address some layout, technique, and pacing topics that I felt could be done better.

Please create a manual save before installing this mod. You will need it if you want to uninstall. The packaged installer walks you through the options and helps you select the patches you need. It is recommended to use Mod Organizer 2 or Vortex. All plugins use the ESP-FE format.
When to install: To get the most out of this mod, it's best to install it before visiting Morthal. Even if it doesn't appear in your diary yet, the task "Lay the Rest" is invisible. If you have been to Morthal, use the ~ key to open the console and type getstage ms14. If the value it returns is 1, 10 or 20, then you're good to go! If it's at stage 30 or higher, you may see some bugs and inconsistencies in the settings. The further into the mission you go when you install it, the more it will appear.
When to uninstall: Since this mod handles a quest script with assigned attributes that starts running as soon as you launch the game, uninstalling will have unpredictable results. It creates a new permanent reference that will remain in your save game even after uninstalling the mod. For best results, if you change your mind, revert to manual saving before installing.

conflict:
▪This mod is not compatible with BUVARP/WARP. I'm going to fix it.
Other notes:
▪This mod does not edit any NPCs, so you should be able to use any NPC appearance overhaul (including child overhauls) with no facial bugs.
▪This mod is not feasible without Creation Kit Fixes.
▪ In addition to its globally valuable functionality, SSEEdit is able to spot errors in record editing, ensuring that this mod can actually be released.
▪Notepad++ with Papyrus integration is my preferred way of scripting.
▪ I don't want to run a simulation without Mod Organizer 2's virtual file system to keep my workspace organized, and the backup/restore features to let me experiment like crazy.
▪AgentRansack helped me find in seconds where any property, variable or function was referenced anywhere in a vanilla or USSEP script.
▪Baretail allows live papyrus recording of "trace" comments so you can quickly test and debug your scripts.
▪ The Speech Reference tool instantly finds any speech or phrase anywhere in Skyrim and then exports that line in a variety of formats.
▪I use Audacity to edit existing dialog …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
