Guide: Using the console to fix quests, add items, and more (in-game + book)

This mod adds an in-game reference book that outlines the most useful Skyrim SE console commands and how to use them to fix broken/stuck quests, add items, fix player stuck locations, and other applications.

Mod.ESP is marked ESL so it doesn't take up a plugin slot, and the mod has been cleaned using SSEEdit.

This book can be found in Riverwood on the porch next to Hilde's chair.

Full guide, for those who don't want the actual mod:

the power of comfort

I, Melvinius, deep plumber and seizer of Secrets, have finally stumbled upon - well, I mean - discovered the greatest secret of all: a brand new school of magic that I call "Solace". By tapping into the console's ubiquitous power flow, even the dumbest mortal clod can tap into Aedra's own abilities. My research shows that our lives are clearly ruled by "problems" and that "problems" can sometimes become "dull." Comfort is the key to unraveling these task threads and restoring sanity and order to your existence.

In the next few pages I will try to clarify the peculiarities of using the console.

Summon console (~)

The console can be summoned by typing the TILDE rune -~- on the keyboard. (I have no idea who this "tilde" might be, but I picture her in my mind as a buxom Norse witch with dark and dreamy eyes, and a ghostly past...) The up/down cursors may be used to scroll through past console commands. The PAGE UP/PAGE DOWN keys on the keypad can be used to scroll through entire pages of console runes, words, and information. This is useful if the console leaks more knowledge at one time than you can display on your mortal screen.

If the console doesn't appear when you summon it (which sometimes happens on some devices with Bethesda games), then you'll have to investigate the matter by searching the interconnected web network using a technology called a web browser. There's nothing I can do about it; you'll have to find your own path to complete the task "Enable console". Once you do this, you can continue with this Book of Comfort.

The remainder of this book will detail the various console commands and how to use them. Console commands are essentially a power word that allow those with mastery of the keypad to manipulate the "Skyrim Engine," the framework of reality. Note that these console commands do not have to be capitalized when entering them on the keyboard; they are listed here in uppercase only for emphasis.

Using the mouse in the console

The mouse is the key to moving a rune called a Cursor, which can anoint something with FOCUS. Place your hand on the mouse and left-click to select objects on the screen. You'll notice that the selected object will display information on the right side of the console. Typically, console commands will be applied to the selected object, and you must click again to deselect the object (without focus) for some commands to fully function.

TCL-toggle collision

If you've ever been trapped in a rock crevice or under a staircase, you know how awkward and silly the whole experience can be. The TCL command will turn off collision and allow you to move through entities, so you can "unstick" yourself and move away from obstacles. The mouse cannot focus on any item for TCL to work. Once the obstruction is cleared, use TCL again to turn collision back on, otherwise things may get worse when the actor and object get caught between each other. Note that when turning collision back on, it's best to position yourself a little on solid ground so you can fall down a bit. If you're too low, you might fall to your death or be teleported to a strange place.

TGM-Switch God Mode

Ah ha, you are an aspirant, mortal, aren't you? Do you desire the power of God? TGM makes you immune to all damage (combat, magic, dro …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
