I've always been a fan of color coding, and that includes Skyrim Holds. I don't like having the royal guard's leather brown armor contrast so sharply with the colorful banners of a given fortress. So I decided to solve this problem.

"Hey, isn't there already a mod that does this?!" I hear you declare. I did try the better Civil War Guard (aka less oppressive class), but it didn't really restore the costumes, it just seemed to add and remove armor until the Guard was equipped with the correct gear. This means that other mods that try to add stuff to the defender usually don't work.

So I made this mod with mod compatibility in mind. I especially wanted to make sure that cloaks and cloaks worked, and for good measure I also tested with Sleevebacks and Stormcloaks.

So after looking at the word guard long enough that it didn't seem like a word anymore, this mod was produced which does:

Changed the armor of all defenders that were changed as a result of the Civil War

If the fortress was originally for the victors of the Civil War, their names would begin with the victorious faction (for example, the Rifton Guards are now called the "Imperial Rifton Guards") to preserve to some extent the aftermath of the Civil War.

It does not modify guards modified as a result of the Civil War.

-Known bugs-

I'm not sure if this happened due to my own loading orders or if it continues to happen, but sometimes, some of the guards the Stormcloaks take over (e.g., Marktas, Forres, Whiterun) won't wear their boots or gloves. I'm going to keep trying to fix this, but if you just target cold digital NPCs and type "resurrect" into the console, that will fix them. Might still write a bug report for this, because if I don't think it affects anyone, I'll probably give up.

This version does not have Imperial/Stormcloak in front of its name.

Suggestions are also welcome.

I've always enjoyed having things being colour coded, and that includes my Skyrim Holds. I disliked having the ugly leather brown armour of the imperial guards contrasting against the coloured banners of a given hold. So I decided to fix that.

"Hey, isn't there already a mod that does that?!" I hear you proclaim. I did try out Better Civil War Guards (A.k.a. Less Oppressive Occupation) but it didn't really revert the outfits, it seems like it just adds and removes armour until the guards equipped the right set. This meant that other mods that tried to add stuff to guards usually just didn't work.

So, I made this mod with mod compatibility in mind. I specifically wanted to make sure that Cloaks and Capes worked, and for good measure I also tested it with Sleeved Guards and Stormcloaks.

So, after enough time of looking at the word Guard to the point where it no longer seems like a word, this mod was produced and here's what it does:

Changes the armour of all guards that were changed due to the outcome of the Civil War

If the hold was originally against the victor of the civil war, their names will be prepended with the victorious faction (e.g. Riften Guards are now called "Imperial Riften Guards") to somewhat preserve the civil war aftermath.

It DOES NOT modify guards that have been modified by the outcome of the Civil War.

--- Known bugs ---

I'm not sure if this just happened due to my own load order or if it will continue to happen, but on occasion, some hold guards that were taken over by the Stormcloaks (e.g. Markarth, Falkreath, Whiterun) just won't wear their boots or gloves. I will continue to try to fix this, but if you just target the chilly-digited NPC and enter "resurrect" in the console, that will fix them. Feel free to write a bug report for this anyway since I might just give up if I think it's not affecting anyone.

--- Coming Soon ---

A version without the prepended Imperial/Stormcloak to the name.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
