A new and improved solution to the issue of unfilled Soul Gems.
The problem of not filling Soul Gems: As old as Skyrim itself, none of the previous solutions were quite perfect.
Insatiable soul gems throw out small souls to prevent filling larger gems. But this is removing a feature from vanilla, not fixing it.
Solution:
[shift]
Little souls should be allowed to fill soul gems. But if a larger soul comes along, it should be able to push that smaller soul. This way you don't miss out on the little soul or the big soul. If you have room for your soul, you will capture it.
[move]
Optionally, displaced souls are allowed to move to smaller available gems. example:
Grand Soul Gem (Small) + Small Soul Gem (Empty) + New Big Soul
-> Large Soul Gem (refill) + Small Soul Gem (refill)
[squatting]
Optionally, it can also be scaled down to fit smaller gems if there really aren't enough soul gems:
Large Soul Gem (Small) + Small Soul Gem (Empty) + New Large Soul
-> Large Soul Gem (refill) + Small Soul Gem (refill)
[Multi-threading]
If multiple souls are captured at once, the algorithm is multi-threaded to handle them. It prioritizes them by size, finding the location of the largest soul first, then moving on to the smaller souls.
[Leveling]
Finally, there is an optional system that allows your Soul Trapping ability to be on par with your Summoning (or Enchantment) skill. All of the model's features, as well as the ability to capture souls of a specific size, can be set to be unlocked at specific levels. Each feature can be configured individually. (This system is disabled by default.)
notes:
Any soul gems you filled before installing this mod will be considered empty by the algorithm. This is an engine limitation. Use or sell these gems before enabling this mod. (Pre-filled gems as you find them will be fine, while Azura's Star/The Black Star will not be affected.)
Configuration works through the MCM menu. You need SkyUI to use it. If you don't have SkyUI you can still use the mod, but if you want to change any options you'll need to use console commands (see FAQ).
Azura's Star can only store Grand Souls, and Black Star can only store Black Souls by default. Optionally, Black Stars can also store Greater Souls, but they cannot be later replaced by Black Souls and are therefore disabled by default.
Happy side effect 1: The same gems will now always be stacked in the inventory, with one exception - the black soul gem (Grand) will be divided into two groups, one for white souls and one for black souls.
Happy Side Effect 2: You can now drop your filled gems without them becoming empty.
Happy side effect 3: Followers using weapons with soul traps will send the captured souls to the player.
That's the gist of it!

The problem of the underfilled soul gem: Old as Skyrim itself, yet none of the previous solutions were quite perfect.
Acquisitive Soul Gems throws small souls away to prevent under-filling larger gems. But that is removing a feature from vanilla, instead of fixing it.
The solution:
[Displacement]
Small souls should be allowed to underfill a soul gem. But if a bigger soul comes along later, it should be able to push that …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
