About this mod Machine translation
Adds a room to Midden that allows trading books for random other books of the same type, such as spell books, skill books, or standard lore books.
What is this mod about:
This mod adds a room called the Forbidden Library near Atronach Forge under Midden near Winter College. There is a shrine inside that allows the player to generate a random book of a given type. This requires:
- A worn book.
- Filled with black soul gems.
- The required type of book.
For the purposes of this mod, the book categories are:
- Spellbook, any spellbook in the game (Vanilla + Dragonborn DLC spellbooks only, future patches including common spell models are planned)
- Skill books, any skill-boosting books (Vanilla + Dragonborn DLC books only)
- Lore Book, any lore in the game (excluding journals, notes, bounties, potion recipes, or elder scrolls)
Note that to get into the disabled library you need to find the keyword in Arch-mage's research.
Spell books aren't grouped by level or school, and skill books aren't grouped by skill, so in theory the library could be a good way to get some more powerful spells or obscure skill books, but the randomness and cost gems of Black Souls ensure it doesn't make it too easy or game-breaking.
I tried to keep the mod friendly and not have a lot of episodes in this mod that are non-lore friendly.
Require:
(Skyrim.esm)Skyrim SE
(Update.esm)
(Dragonborn.esm)Dragonborn DLC
This mod makes some modifications to the "Arch-mage's Quarters" and "The Midden" cells, so I'd say it probably won't change anything that changes those cells.
This is the first pattern I've added, if you have any questions, ideas, or insults please let me know.
Thanks

What this mod is:
This mod adds a room into the Midden, under the College of Winterhold, near the Atronach Forge, called the Forbidden Library. There's a shrine inside that allows the player to spawn a random book of a given type. This requires:
- A ruined book.
- A Filled Black Soul Gem.
- A book from the type desired.
For the purpose of this mod, categories of book are:
- Spell Book, any spell book in the game (Vanilla + Dragonborn DLC Spell books only, plans to include patches for common spell mods in future)
- Skill Book, any of the books that level up skills (Again, Vanilla + Dragonborn DLC books only)
- Lore Book, any of the lore books in the game (Does not include journals, notes, bounties, potion recipes or Elder Scrolls)
Note that to enter the Forbidden Library, you'll need to find the key in the Arch-mage's study.
Spell books are not grouped by levels or schools and skill books are not grouped by skills, so in theory the library could be a good way to get some of the more powerful spells or obscure skill books, but the random nature and cost of black soul gems ensures it's not too easy or game breaking.
I've tried to keep the mod lore-friendly, not that there's much plot in this mod to be non-lore-friendly.
Requirements:
(Skyrim.esm) Skyrim SE
(Update.esm)
(Dragonborn.esm) Dragonborn DLC
This mod makes some changes to the "Arch-mage's Quarters" and "The Midden" cells, so I'm going to say it probably wouldn't play well with anything else that changes those cells.
This is the first mod i've added, so let me know if you have any questions, thoughts or insults.
Thanks
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
