ELFX Weather - TrueStorms Compatibility Patch

I've always thought that the weather module offered by ELFX was a "forgotten" option compared to the other options available on ELFX. As a result, I always considered it rather unpopular and never tried it myself, or to be honest, I ever thought about it. Well, you could say I'm a bit surprised to find out that after releasing patches over the last few months, the most popular patch by far (second only to Obsidian Weathers) is the one for ELFX Weathers. Niches are great, aren't they? :) So I finally gave it a download and spent some time in xEdit, and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. Granted, this isn't a complete weather overhaul of its own systems or textures, but I do think it does a good job of covering up the overall mood and aesthetic of all of Skyrim's weather, and I'm especially surprised by the windy and rainy weather. To make things even better, when I started mixing it with True Storms, I realized that the two mods are actually meant to be used together. While I think ELFX does a good job of transforming the coloring and lighting of stormy weather, it doesn't add much in the way of audio or effects, and luckily True Storms is pretty good! Long story short, If you haven't tried ELFX Weathers, I highly recommend doing so, especially if you're looking for a lightweight option with little impact on performance. For those of you who already love ELFX weather, True Storms will do a great job of adding extra intensity to your storms. Either way, I hope you enjoy this combination! :)

feature

  • A complete overhaul of all audio from ELFX Weather (which previously only used vanilla audio files), True Storms adds audio including 25 thunder sounds and all ambient and indoor rain sounds. This will completely eliminate those annoying looping thunder audio sounds that are always present in vanilla thunder audio :)
  • Completely revamped ELFX weather's particle and shader effects with those provided by True Storms, making storms feel even more intense.
  • Assigning all of True Storm's unique weather to ELFX's regional data creates a more diverse mix of weather, as True Storms fills in where ELFX previously lacked, primarily with more stormy and foggy weather options.
  • Modified Solstheim zone data, including all changes to the unique Ashes weather provided by True Storms, some of which can be seen in the screenshot above. An optional Wet & Cold patch is also available which integrates all the unique Ashes weather it adds for all your Ashes related needs :)
  • Visual preference for both versions. Both versions include all the features mentioned above, they just change the "aesthetics" of stormy weather by adjusting ambient lighting, shading, fog and more.

Here's a general overview of the visual changes in both versions:

-Somber-

This version retains the visual changes of ELFX Weathers while incorporating all the thunder, rain and internal audio added by True Storms, as well as heavier, denser rain particles. I've weathered this nexus a number of times over the past few months, and I can honestly say that ELFX is actually closer to the dark, gritty aesthetic I've been trying to achieve in some of my other hybrid patches. If, like me, you prefer your storms to be scary dark and intense like me, then this might be the perfect choice for you :)

-Lucid-

This version selectively combines some of the lighting and shading of real storms into ELFX's stormy weather to brighten them and make them less dull. If you're not the biggest fan of how storms can be darkened in ELFX, or just like more visibility and color in your weather, then this version might be more up your alley :)

The video below compares the two versions to help you decide on your preference. I'm using ELFX for overall lighting …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
