Remap the control scheme of the xbox one/360 controller, allowing binding some buttons for mods (i.e. ducking) and bringing some keyboard functionality to the controller

describe:

Like many others, I prefer to play Skyrim with a controller, but also enjoy using mods like TK Dodge to add additional features. This caused a problem, however, as all the buttons on a standard gamepad were occupied in the base game. This is just a control chart text file that Skyrim SE can use on top of the main file. It is designed for use with xbox one/360 controllers but will work with other gamepads (untested). This file is located in Skyrim by default (but is included in BSA), and the original file is simply overwritten when the game starts, making it super lightweight.

The new mapping is as follows:

  • B is released for use (it is set to hotkey 8, but can still be used with the mod. I had problems if TK Dodge wasn't assigned to anything.)
  • Back button is now player menu (Inventory/Map/Magic/Statistics)
  • LB + Back is now waiting
  • R3 (right click) is also released.
  • R3 + LB: switch perspective
  • D-Pad Down is no longer associated with Favorites. It's now assigned as hotkey 3. (I use it to toggle the compass with iHUD)
  • Other D-Pad directions:
  • Left: Hotkey 1
  • Right: Hotkey 2
  • Up + Left: Hotkey 4
  • Up + Right:Hotkey 5
  • Down + Left: Hotkey 6
  • Down + Right: Hotkey 7
  • LB+Start: Quicksave
  • LB + B: Quick inventory
  • LB + A: Quick map
  • LB + X: Quick magic
  • LB + Y: Quick statistics

Commands requiring multiple buttons must be pressed in the order shown because of how the game interprets them (so technically hold the first and press the second).

Feel free to use this as the basis for your own control map. For convenience, I've added a list of xbox gamepad buttons and their associated codes in hex form in the readme file.

Note: Do not modify controlmap.txt in Windows Notepad. This will destroy it. Notepad does not have proper file encoding. If you want to make your own map, I recommend using a text editor with auto-coding capabilities, such as Notepad++.

Installation directory:

NOTE: After installation, you may have to go to System/Controls and reset to default ("Y") in the game menu for the new map to take effect.

NMM:

  • Download using NMM
  • Activate in NMM

manual:

  • Download files
  • Extract the Interface folder into the data folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\Data)
  • If prompted, overwrite

uninstall:

NMM: Disable or uninstall in NMM, the file will be deleted.

Manual: Remove controlmap.txt from C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\Data\Interface\Controls\PC and any containing folders that are now empty.

After uninstalling, reset the controls to their default values as described above.

compatibility:

This mod is compatible with any mod that does not modify controlmap.txt.

Acknowledgments:

Thanks to willdoucet for activating this mod with his Gamepad Unbound aka scroll keys for the tk dodge 8-) control map mod and for providing the basic text files I worked on.

Like many others, I prefer playing Skyrim with a controller, but also like to use mods such as TK Dodge to add additional features. Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
